Hi,

I have a "USB2.0 to IDE" external case and a 120GB Seagate drive (ST312002
2A drive) - which I connect to my laptop and desktop system - and
periodically gets corrupted. The external case has its own power source,
USB2.0 to IDE cable which is connected to a USB2 PCI adapter.

I have had to FDISK and FORMAT the drive repeatedly and am now frustrated as
there must be a reason for the corruption.
Has anyone experienced this before ort have a resolution?

I format the 120gb drive using a Windows 98SE bootable floppy. The system
the drive is connected to only permits a Primary Partition of 48.9GB.
However I can format the full 120GB (111GB actually due to the drive
overhead) in NTFS format, successfully on my Win2000 laptop.
I have been able to successfully backup my 40GB laptop to the 120GB drive a
few times however it intermittently corrupts, indicated by a repeated entry
in the Application log of
Source NTFS
Event Id 55,
Category :Disk and a
description of "The file system structure on the disk E: is currupt and
unusable. Please ruin the chkdsk utility on the volume E"

Any assistance will be appreciated
Thanks

I have a 200GB maxtor ATA drive with an enclosure bought separately. I never installed the drivers since it seemed to work fine without them on my laptop w/ windows xp. However, on my win2k desktop, I encountered many problems eventually resulting in the corrupted disk. In retrospect, I should have just installed the drivers. I probably thought it was just a USB device, thinking it was PnP. Seems really obvious now of course.

Can you recommend any methods for recovering data from the disk?

Read with interest the thread so far...

I'm currently investigating corruption problems with a Freecom Classic USB external case with 80Gb drive. A CD was supplied with this drive, but no USBSTOR.SYS or DISK.SYS files included. The computer to which it's being attached runs W2K SP3, and I note that an earlier version of USBSTOR.SYS (5.00.2195.4854) is already in place in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers sub-dir.

Now the questions!

(1) I can find an updated version of USBSTOR.SYS but not DISK.SYS. Are these files like a matched pair, or is just updating USBSTOR.SYS perfectly acceptable? If not, can someone kindly quote a URL please?

(2) I'm lead to believe that SP4 needs to be installed for this external drive to operate correctly, although it's not mentioned in the Freecom documentation, nor has anyone mentioned it in this thread so far.

Appreciate any thoughts or comments.

GOAOZ,
I definitely had W2K SP4 installed...Id suggest you install it.
I suspect the original External USB TO IDE case to have been faulty, possibly due to power or even the internal firmware, as I am now able to connect a range of Seagate drives, 12GB, 20GB and 200GB to my W2KPRO/SP4 system
Even the suspect 120GB now seems ok since I am using different external case.

Here are the versions of my drivers which now seem to function.

1) The Operating System is Win 2000 Professional with SP4.

2) The "NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Controller" drivers are "ousb2hub.sys" and
"ousbehci.sys" version 2.0.60 provided by OrangeWare Corporation

3) The "USB 2.0 Root Hub Device" driver is "ousb2hub.sys version 2.0.6.0
provided by Orangeware Corporation

4) The "USB Mass Storage Device" driver is "usbstor.sys" version
5.00.2195.6655 provided by Microsoft

Trevor

5) The 120GB Seagate Drive "ST312002 2A USB Device" is an ST212002 2A and
the driver is "disk.sys" version 5.00.2195.6655 provided by Microsoft

6) The "Generic Volume" driver is version 5.0.2183.1 provided by Microsoft.
