As a company we are looking to replace the existing engineer's laptops with more modern whizzy ones however laptops that come with built in serial ports seem to be very old, dated and large! As alot of network equipment and phone systems (IPOffice) still need a serial connection so we look to be limited unless anyone has any feedback on how well the USB to serial cables work - I have heared that they work ok on some things but not others....this isn't really good enough for us though. Others have mentioned that you can't maunually put a memroy address in (where conflicts arise) as there is no software/drivers that come with the cables????

Anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks

i have not had any problems with the one i use. a trendnet brand. i think just as long as it comes with software to map the ports right. I get into magix locally, ipo dte ports, all types of networking gear (extreme, adtran cisco, netgeat) i even use it for hyperterminal reports via the smdr port and it works fine every time. the only gotcha is plug the cable into the same usb port or the com port assignment will change.

i use one,the brand is freecom
it works great

I have pcmcia to serial, no issues at all. no software needed.

Or you can always buy a HP laptop, they actually still come with a serial port :)
However I still use my USB-2-SERIAL cable anyway.

Thanks all much appreciated,

Where's the best place to get them? e.g RadioShack or Keyspan etc?

I've used Keyspan and Belken with no problems. I bought a demo multitech bluetooth to serial adapter but could never get it to work and their support group isn't much help.
