I'm running Windows XP on an Intel d845wn mobo. I've had the computer running great for about a year, but the one thing I've never used is my USB ports. There are two ports wired to the front of the case.
Last week, my cousin bought a Sony Clie PEGT615C, and seeing as his PC is very old (without USB and no internet), he wanted to use mine to download software for his PDA. So we hooked up his interface to my computer, and as far as I know, all you need to do to get the thing working is plug it into a USB port, make sure the thing has power, and then push the synchronize button while the PDA is in the interface.
I've never actually looked too much into using USB, as I've never had a need for it, but as far as I know, when it is plugged in and syncs the PC and the PDA, Windows XP should detect a new piece of hardware attached. I installed the Clie software as well, just to be on the safe side. But every time I hooked the Clie up and pushed sync, windows would say that it detected a new device, but then it would say it malfunctioned, and the two would not connect. I looked into my BIOS to make sure USB support was turned on, and it wasn't so I turned it on, still nothing. I looked in device manager to see if maybe I needed drivers for my USB ports, and it said that none were installed. My only guess is that somehow/somewhere, I need to get drivers for my USB controller. Does this sound right?? If so, where would I get drivers for this??

Here's a link to the INtel page for the mobo model number you mentioned:

The drivers are listed there, as well as bios updates. You also may want to check the connection for those USB ports. If it was a "home-built" system, its possible whoever may have hooked up the front USB ports didn't look at the pin-out correctly. Intel has a picture of the correct pin-out on that page as well.

Also, some USB devices require that you install the software BEFORE hooking up the device. You may want to delete the Clie (or whatever it shows up as) from your Device Manager, reboot, install the software, and then plug the Clie back in. Worth a shot. USB is finicky sometimes.

Lumbering, I guess we both did the same thing at the same time. Sorry to be redundant.

I doubt the problem is the USB controller and its drivers. Unless you went thru some serious configuration, USB is there by default in XP.

Likely it's the drivers for your device. Re-read the manual that came with the Clie to go through the uninstall/reinstall procedure.
