USB printer port is missing

I have a lexmark z645 and while trying to install it there is a error message saying the specified port is unknown. I tried going through printers and faxes to install it but there are no ports listed and I am not able to create a new port either. I checked the registry and everything seems to be correct there. I am running windows xp sp2 on a gateway.

Is USB listed in Device Manager? If not, then make sure it's enabled in BIOS.

Do other USB devices work?

yes. Everything else is working fine. Just not any USB printers.

Are you installing the printers in exact accordance with their instructions?

Have you tried a different USB printer cable. Yours may have gone faulty.
