Hi to all.
My pc tells me that the usb ports are working fine. But nothing works.Ive tried connecting different things, all say not connected. The system is 6 months old they havnt worked since I bought it.I have taken it back to the guy who built it and he can only put the problem down to a faulty m/b.No prob it is under warranty but will take 3 to 4 weeks to replace it. I was running 2000 pro and now I use xp pro,usb never worked on either..I have 2 usb ports directly off the m/b and 2 on the front of the case I have a 1.2duron,40 gigh/d,Asus A7N66-VM m/b.It may well be a faulty m/b. Any ideas that may correct the problem.
thanks in advance.

What have you tried connecting? I assume you are aware that for devices that need extra drivers, you must install the drivers before connecting the device.
Also are you trying to connect USB2 devices to a USB1.1 port? (I'm afraid I don't know that board at all).

John

xp pro should autodetect a lot of devices, regardless of when the motherboard was made. you may still need drivers if windows can't find them for you.

what are you trying to connect? I know most microsoft products will autodetect with xp pro. but if you don't even get a message stating it was detected, there may be an underlying problem.

are these usb 2.0 devices?

Hi to all,
I have tried connecting card readers of different brands.Joysticks from microsoft and Logitech with drivers. No auto detect at all with xp.With 2000 pro both microsoft and logitech joysticks could be used through the midi/game port.with xp it dosent work in that port either. Will new drivers help if it isnt auto detecting the devices? What is meant by a usb 2.0 device?

A USB 2.0 device is one that is written to use the USB 2.0 specification. It allows a far higher transfer rate than 1.1 (480Mbps rather than 12Mbps), but in order to use it, the ports they connect to must support the device. If they don't, they should work, but at the older speed. The effect will be more noticeable with disks and imaging devices that transfer lots of data, rather than keyboards/mice where the data stream is quite small.

If the machine is over about 18 months old then the chances are it won't, because boards didn't support it up until around then. You should be able to get an addin PCI card to add a couple of USB2 ports to a machine though.

Hola, let me put my two cents worth in here, and hope that it helps a bit...

a while back I overclocked my system upto 13% and noticed that the USB ports didn't function as they should, they where detected and drivers installed but nothing I hooked up worked...

so I suggest that you check to see if the CPU isn't overclocked and that that isn't causing the problem...

Ben

PS... if that isn't the case than just ignore what I've just said...

Thanks for the explaination jbarnett on usb 2.0 devices. any other ideas out there why they dont work. Will new drivers for the m/b help if xp pro doesnt autodetect any new device?

Have you tried bmac50's suggestion of new drivers for the board?

John

I would recommend the use of Nvidia's latest 2.04? unified platform drivers off Nvidia's website, know to cure lots of ill's.
I didn't notice anybody pointing out the possibility of the USB ports being disabled in the bios, most bios setup's have several differant settings in the bios to enable 2,4 or 6 USB ports enable legacy USB or disable all! (don't know the specific layout of yours)
It is also worth pointing out that it is very easy to burn out front panel USB ports by simply getting the header USB connectors on wrong (as a custom builder I've done it once in a rush) Martin

If its a nForce 2 board you need xp service pack 1 to use the usb ports.

Thats USB2 isn't it?

Tried to download new drivers for the m/b,within 30 seconds I got a blue error screen and the p/c reebooted itself.I dont really know what I am doing when it comes to drivers and m/b,s.
