How do you check if a usb port is working correctly on a windows 98 computer.?

the problem is that the computer is not recognising the usb port from my new printer. the options to choose are com1 com2 lpti:1 etc....no usb.......or you can add port ( how do you add a port?) do I have to turn something on in the bios or enable the ports through device manager etc.....I need help.......

Go into control panel
From the control panel, open up your device manager. In the list of devices look for every reference to USB in the hardware list. Delete each and every instance of USB from your list. You will see something like USB Root Hub, USBIntel...(chipset), etc. Delete Root Hub first then the rest. This will erase all USB drivers previous installed in the system.

Reboot your computer and Windows 98 will automatically find all your USB ports again. Once this is done, install the driver from your CD ROM delivered with the printer.

rocket. do not start multiple threads, add to the one you posted first. I have left you advice in your first post.

Howdy:

Have you checked BIOS to make sure USB was enabled in there first??

Win98 won't/can't detect anything that isn't enabled !!

yes guys have checked bios, have checked leads to printer etc. also Deleted each and every instance of USB from my list. USB Root Hub, USBIntel...(chipset), etc. Deleted Root Hub first then the rest. I erased all USB drivers previous installed in the system. (device mgr)

but guess what guys nothing, the usb port must be working because when you connected the printer, windows recognises it, by saying new hardware is installed, but yet when I go to select a port for the printer, there is no usb ports to select, only com1, com2, lpt1, so which port do I configure.

Guys could it be due to that the older version of windows 98 does not recognise usb ports, I might have to upgrade what do you think....?

If the printer came with an installation disk then you should use it. I know from experience that HP printers on USB ports sometimes use a "DOT4" port that is installed by the setup program, so you may need this for the printer to function.

You might try using Windows Update site and update Win98 as much as possible. Some things do not work if you dont have the latest Direct X version installed. Sometimes your motherboard may have some revised chipset or BIOS version that you can change also.

Also insure the printer is plugged in and turned on at boot time. Especially when you install it. The USB Port may be pulling juice so you have to have a good power supply. If you are using USB and not Parallel Printer, disable the old printer port if possible.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
