I am desperately hoping someone out there can help me with this. I was on the phone with Microsofts tech support yesterday to get absolutely no help on this since they can't figure out what the problem is.
I installed ME first over 98 and my USB would no longer work nor would my scanner hooked up to it. I then did a clean install on ME and it still doesn't work. When you open up the USB in the device manager there is only one thing stemming from it saying compact PCI to USB open host controller (I only have 1 usb on my pc but I could of swore there was more than 1 thing showing in there when I was running 98)and it has the yellow exclamation point on it. It says its either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. It tells you to try updating drivers, I have and they tell my I have the best driver already. I can't install the software in for the scanner because it tells me the USB is turned off in the bios and to contact the computer manufacturer. I did and they told me there's no way to turn my USB off and on in the bios. Microsoft told me that the USB on/off in the bios is the same as plug and play os yes/no. No matter if it's on yes or no, the prompt for the scanner software says it's off. I was told my computer manufactorer also that maybe I needed to download off their site and install a new USB. I did and the prompt comes up saying: A previous version of Microsoft USB supplement has been found, do one of the following-a.)uninstall previous version if you've already installed already b.)re-install windows revision b c.)if you have already run this setup in this session, reboot. Micro. tech couldn't figure this one either. He said it seems like it's not letting me update the drivers and had me delete the files to USB in the Windows/system32 folder but they copy themselves right back. I have a HP scanjet 3300c scanner, went to their site and found an updated driver for ME, downloaded it but again, it won't let me install it in because it says the USB is turned off. I don't know where else to go from here. Micro. tech told me there's nothing they can do for me because they haven't encountered this problem before and I guess Im suppose to go without my USB if I want ME. I deperately need help here so if anyone has an idea or knows what the problem is it would be greatly appreciated.

This is a shot in the dark. Get into your CMOS Setup at startup and look for Integrated Peripherals. If it's there, select it, look for USB Controller, and enable it if it's disabled. Then select Exit And Save Changes.
If you don't see Integrated Peripherals, look in the other setup selections for USB Controller. [sig][/sig]

ski's suggestion is a good one. Try that one first. I don't have ME but you could try this:

goto device manager
highlight the one with the caution symbol
click on remove (say yes if it prompts for confirmation)
close device manager
turn your scanner ON
shutdown win for a cold boot.

This should prompt you for a device driver. So then, you should be able to install the latest drivers. This may seem a tad stupid. But try unpluging the scanner from the USB port. Then plug it in again. Make sure windows is on when you do this. My thought is it will reset it kinda.
Maybe it will work! [sig][/sig]

Thanks for the responses! They were all good ideas, but... Ski-There's a periphal configuration in setup that has serial port, parallel port, mouse, floppy and both IDE configurations, no USB. The only thing in there pertaining to USB is the one setting I early mentioned for plug and play os and it's on yes.
MiggyD-When Windows loads in, it say's new hardware found compact PCI to USB open host controller and then prompts for restart, it then still has the yellow exclam. and theirs no prompt for device driver. I did try installing the other driver that shows up when you choose display a list of drivers, but when I see if I can update off of that one, it searches and finds the first one I had (compact...) and installs that one in automatically. So that says to me that that one is definately the right one.
Agent Smith-I have unplugged and plugged the scanner in with Windows on, with the pc off, unplugged while I try updating drivers, etc, etc, The scanner use to come up as an imaging device in the device manager and it's not coming up at all anymore. It's totally not reading it.
Thanks for your responses. I know this is a tough one, I've been everywhere and asked everyone and noone seems to be able to figure it out. Anymore suggestions?

i have the same problem with "win Me"
but with a elsa microlink 56k usb -modem
it stuppid it works with 98 but not winMe
arhhhhhhh!
waste of time upgrading really !

Other message boards have indicated that Windows ME does not support a lot of hardware and it's possible that your USB controller may be on that list.
You may want to just reinstall Win98(if you can) until your MB manuf. hopefully comes out with a WinME supported driver. [sig][/sig]

I'm having a similar problem. However, I uninstalled Win ME and was never able to get the usb device to work again for the same reason as mentioned before.

Booted in safe mode, usb root hub appeared without exclamation mark. Removed it, restarted in normal mode, USB no longer working.

Go figure.....

There as many have said before me; problems with "ME" the best would be to dump "ME" and reinstall '98 SE. There are currently more stable drivers for all the items that you have listed. "ME" is supposed to be a 'home or sliced down ' version of windows. I've already removed it from 6 computers for people that thought thy were getting the next best thing to win'2000.
The best thing at this time , unless you MUST have "ME" on your computer would be to make a bootable disk from a know good running '98 system , make sure that it has fdsik on it and do the "fdisk & format c: dance " then reinstall '98 SE then go about reinstalling all the connected items that you have.
This will give you back a windows version that has everything that all the broadband providers are testing thier equipment on.

Sorry for not being to help getting this going.

No1 go to motherboard home page and down load all the winme drivers if tou cannot findit go to next get the very latest scanner drivers(please note the scanner drivers may be zipped up and need unpacking to a folder on your machine before you can install them. next go to \windows and find a hidden folder called inf rename this to inf1 then install the new motherboard drivers before you restart remove any mention of the scanner from device manager reboot when windows says if found new hard ware point to the new scanner druivers. Note some usb device like you to install the drivers first then attach the device also don't forget to name the inf folder back.

after other answers how about a mother board disk, i did not see that 1! or download same

I found something here about ME not reading 16bit drivers, etc. Maybe some of the info here will help a few to better understand changes(?) to ME and why certain problems are occurring ..... ..... I would also like to mention that I experienced problems with upgrading SE to ME, however now that I'm using the full install of ME (not just the upgrade - BOTH are being sold without explanation of the differences) I've had virtually no problems. IMHO, the only major difference I've noticed is the convenient nearly-unattended install of the full version.

The exact same thing happened to me when I upgraded to ME from 98. My USB ports all went dead and my scanner didn't work. I went to BIOS and it told me that my USB ports were activated. Didn't make sense.

But I know the answer. It's your scanner driver and possibly your printer driver as well. You need to get on the internet and download ME compatible drivers from all your peripherals. Scanners are notorious for screwing up windows ME and mucking up the USB ports.

I fixed this problem by reinstalling windows ME and then loading all the new drivers prior to installing the scanner and printer.

Now everything works just fine.

By the way two close friends of mine had the exact same problem. When they reinstalled and updated the drivers their systems worked too.

Good luck!
