I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP1a on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe Motherboard with an A4 Tech 5 button 2 wheel optical USB mouse. I've been running this system for a while now with no problems. Well this afternoon I sat down at my computer and my mouse started to act funny. When I moved it it would stop responding for half a second to 5 seconds and then start up again. It does this sporadically with no real pattern other then it only happens when I move the mouse. I restarted the computer, I went to windows update and got all the patches and restarted the computer again, I switched USB ports, I updated the mouse drivers, and none of this solved the problem. The weird thing is that the mouse was fine this morning and I took a 3 hour nap at which time I left my computer on like I always do and now I'm having problems. I don't see how the mouse could have went from fine to bad in just 3 or so hours. I've also looked in device manager and there are no shown errors.

Any suggestions would be greatly greatly appreciated.

Generic response : have you checked your system for viruses, adware and trojans ?
Sasser comes to mind right at this moment, but it could be something else.

Pascal.

I've run ad-aware and NAV, both updated and short of a few cookies that were picked up by ad-aware, nothing.

Installed this and didn't help the situation. Still having the same problem

You did a Device Manger uninstall, reboot, and let Windows re-dedect sequence?

. if there are batteries in the mouse, replace them
. if you installed any downstread USB device, unplug the device, and remove it from the Device Manager listing.

Reboot.

No batteries in the mouse, but not sure what downstread USB devices are. However I haven't added or removed any devices before or since my mouse started acting up. I have since plugged my mouse into a USB to PS/2 converter and plugged it into my PS/2 slot and am getting the same results. I hope soon to be able to take my mouse to another computer and see if it is just the mouse. Thanks for all the help and I'll be sure to post my results just in case anyone else has this problem.

I too have the same problem, I'm also running XP Pro and have a microsoft optical mouse. My syptoms started exactly the same but has now moved on to the mouse stopping working completely. I didnt have sp1a on when it started, but i have now and all updates, but the problem still exists.

If i unplug the mouse and plug it in again it will work for a while longer, so i suspect it may be a USB issue?.
I'll keep my eye on this post

I got the chance to hook my mouse up to another computer today and played around with it for about an hour and a half with no problems. No pauses, no USB disconnected sounds, nothing at all bad. The mouse worked fine. Well I've come back to my computer now and have been using it for about an hour as well and the problems seemed to have disappeard... not sure why, I didn't even restart. Just unplugged my mouse, went to friends house came home and plugged it back in and it worked. The only thing I can think of is maybe it wasn't getting enough power from my motherboard and needed to recharge or something... not sure if that's even possible, but it's good enough for me.
