Hi, this has probably been asked before, is there a way to make my XP pc happy to boot up with mouse and keyboard attached via an usb adaptor?
Thanks in advance, Matt.

Hmmm, have you checked the pc manufacturer for a BIOS update? I think that's probably the problem.

What errors do you get and when do you receive them?

Also -- if you're switching from a PS/2 mouse to a USB Mouse (and Keyboard) remove the entries to the old ones from CONTROL PANEL --> SYSTEM.

If it doesn't seem to be the BIOS, you might try adding them this way.

1. Boot up with PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard.
2. Unplug the mouse and plug in the USB mouse.
3. Make sure it finshes "installaing" itself.
4. REMOVE any reference to the PS/2 mouse from Control Panel --> System (Device Manager)
5. Reboot.
6. Repeat process with Keyboard.

In the BIOS settings for your computer, load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings, and then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB Support.

This missing thread had the following comment from "Bcastner" which has fixed problems in the past.

xp pro sp2 hangs on startup with usb

"Disable BIOS legacy support for either USB 1 or 2, do not have both enabled. BIOS support for USB 2.x would be my choice.

Without the USB devices connected, stop the WIA service:
Start, Run, services.msc
Scroll down to Windows Image and Acquisition service and stop it. Set it to Manaul as its startup state.

Reboot and test again.

Thanks for the advice, I will try tonight and see what I can do. I didn't get an error message by the way it just didn't work. It worked fine if I "hot-plugged" it while on but not when I booted up with it plugged in.
Regards, Matt.
