I have a San disk removeable 128 MB memory stick high speed 2.0 "cruzer mini". When I plug it into one of the 2 ports on the front of my computer (gateway 2 Ghz running windows XP profesional) the computer just shuts off. It doesn't power down it just shuts off. It seems to be only one of the 2 ports that this happens to. It doesn't do it every time though maybe one in 3 times. I don't have as much info about the system as I would like because I am not in front of that computer at the moment. Any ideas?

Just to start out, go to device mgr and see if there are any issues there, like yellow markers or anything out of the ordinary.

One of the front USB ports maybe wired up wrongly.
VCC, Data minus, Data plus, ground
When the PC doesn't shut down is the port working.

I'm not sure but it might be a Gateway thing. I have a older Gateway Profile that does exactly the same thing on a USB 1.1 port. It also shuts down intermittently when I try to use the USB interface to a digital camera. The USB seems to work well enough with other devices - such as a USB printer - but really doesn't seem to like Storage devices. I tried an awful lot of things to make it work properely - no luck. In the end I had to admit defeat! As I said - I came to the conclusion that it must be some inherent instability in the Gateway design (this of course is my own subjective opinion). The fact that it sort of half worked - some of the time - seems to show that it is not a setup problem. Maybe different drivers would help - but I tried quite a few and couldn't fix it. Sorry to be so pessimistic!

Kim.
