Every time I install a new USB driver the installation program tells me everything is fine, but the info never shows up in the device manager and it never recognizes the devices (joystick, digital camera, zip drive).

I just had a new hard drive installed by Best Buy about a month ago (warrenty work) and since then I can't use any of my USB stuff. Is there a patch or something I missed along the way?

Thanx for the help!

Actually I do seem to remember some plug and play patch for ME, run the Windows Update, go through and download any recommended and critical updates you see... However, having said that, in device manager, under USB, does your controller appear there? You might reinstall your USB drivers for that motherboard just to be safe. Another thing with USB, is you usually install the software first, then plugin the device. If you have been doing this the other way, remove the devices, then remove them from device manager, then uninstall any softwares associated through add/remove programs.
Let me know.

Thank you for the response. The problem is that it does not show up in the device manager even. I thought I might have plugged in before re-installing so I checked there, but it's not there. Even after re-installing (and again and again) the drivers, it does not show up (even after re-booting also). That's why I figured it must be a bug or something that needs a patch. I will try the Windows update and advise.

Thanx!

Hi, I am having the same problem as campari. I have tried uninstalling and removing and plugging in in different orders. My computer will not recognize any usb devices and my controller will not show up. How do I see what kind of motherboard I have for the new drivers. Where do I get the drivers once I know what brand of motherboard I have? I am really stumped here. Please help me out.

christkt527, sounds like you've got the same thing I got. Nothing but trouble!!

Here's the worst thing... I tried to go to the Microsoft website and get the updates for ME (that I'm sure I'm missing since I just had a new harddrive installed and had to re-install ME from my "rescue disk"). Well I get to the point where it's supposed to "scan my harddrive" to determine what updates I need, and lo and behold (just like Microsoft!) it just sits there, and the status indicator/bar never goes above 0%. 0%!!!!! I let it sit there for over an hour, and it never once went over.....

0%!!!!!!!!!!!

So I can't even get a Microsoft Windows ME patch/update for the piece of crap O/S I'm using! I'm sure this is why my device manager never recognizes a new piece of USB hardware being installed!

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I can't use my Sony digital camera now. I can't use the joystick for Flight Simulator. I can't use the USB port to connect the ZIP drive for my work files. I'M TOTALLY SCREWED!!!

Go back to windows update, click on the personalize link. Add the windows catalog option. Then go and you'll be able to manually download updates. Also go to and install belarc advisor. It gives you a complete readout of your system, see what info it gives you on your usb controller (this also applies to christkt527)
