I installed a USP 2.0 PCI card and an external drive on my XP SP2 system and then connected a portable hub to the card. I ran into all sorts of issues where anything I put into the hub, would not be detected. So put the hub aside for later. Then I added another ext drive and started to have problems. I thooght it was IRQ conflicts but everything was fine. Finally, I replaced the PCI board with a Bulkin card and everything was fine... except during the process I reconfigured the first drive to be something other than a disk! I did this via Add New Hardware. I was desparate as nothing I did would get the system to find drivers for this. This drive has working fine for 6 months and is full of my pictures, home videos, and some movies. I have contacted the mfgr (SimpleTech) and they said they'll replace it. Personally, I don't want my family history to get mailed off anywhere. There must be a way to reconfigure the device. Below is a comparison of some of the device details compared to a Maxtor One Touch I have:
M= Maxtor
S= SimpleTech

Compatable ID's:

Does anyone know if this can be reconfigured??

Bcastner and JASJim, sorry, my mistake. Soon many things going on and one small brain to do it all,lol.

What i meant to say is what the other person did say. Actually, what i should have said in my first post is to leave out the formatting part, just try it out of the box and as a slave h drive on an ide line.
Again, my apology. I have to slow down a bit and say what i mean.

Not solved... but resolved.
I attached the drive as a slave IDE and copied all my "precious" files to the Maxtor USB drive. I will reformat the drive and return it for replacement. I was up front with SimpleTech about what I had done. They didn't know if what I did caused this or if the board inside the box failed, but they said they would replace it as it is still under warrantee. I'd really like to know what happened but will just have to let go!

Thank you all very much with your support. Bottom line, I got my data and I'll have a working drive.

Great, glad you got your data! Plus you get an RMA!

Re RMA a similar thing happened to me. I have this MSI NEO2 mobo, which is pretty big. Putting a dvd burner into my case accidentally knocked off the teeniest tiniest chip, size of the end of a matchstick. Needless to say the mobo was kaput. I called MSI, told them the truth, the guy said only because i didnt lie about it he was gonna give me an RMA number, and i got a new mobo and all is well, runs like a top. So it pays to tell them the truth. They know all the lies like: "Ya, i got this mobo and its missing a chip and wont boot, i didnt do nothing to it." Like they wont know better when they see the mobo, they're just not that stupid.
