This is what happened to a friends computer. Her daughter had the camera connected and disconnected using "Safely remove hardware device". Ever since then the only USB device the computer will recognize is the camera (as a Mass Storage Device"). The previously working printer and flash drive show as "Unknown Device". She has tried to rectify this using system restore but no luck.

We have also tried uninstalling, reinstalling etc but nothing works, just reads in Device Manager as Unknown Device. When we check properties it tell us that there is no driver installed. (except, of course, for the camera)

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Found this solution on another forum that worked for several users:

"Shutdown your PC, disconnect its main power cord and leave it disconnected for a while(I recommend 30 minutes as that's how long I waited), reconnect the power cord, and boot up your PC.

Assuming there are other USB ports on the computer, has she tried using the flash drive or printer on a different port? Just a quick thought.

Computers are like bikinis. They save people a lot of guesswork.

There are 6 ports and we've tried them all, same result for each, reads the camera but nothing else.

I will tell her to try the power thingy and let you know how it goes.

Might be worth clearing CMOS and setting back to manufacturer's defaults...
