While trying to install a working scanner (Xerox 4800) onto a new PC (XP) I was told to connect the USB cable. On doing so, Photoshop started running and, I suspect, prevented correct installation of the scanner driver (an unhelpful error message was displayed). The ScanSoft program has the scanner in its list of devices. Performing a TEST in the device Properties window says it is OK but ScanSoft cannot actually communicate with it.
I have stopped Photoshop autorunning when I plug in a USB memory stick but there is no Autorun tab in the Scanner properties.
Any Ideas ?

I realised later that I had made a mistake. The program that causes the problem is 'Lightroom' a cousin of PhotoShop.
it turns out here is an entry for the "Adobe Photo Downloader" in the registry key My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\microsoft\Windows\CurentVersion\Run When I deleted that and rebooted, the problem went away and the scanner software worked fine.

Unfortunately, I am told that when I next run Lightroom it will put the entry back in the registry, so I will have to delete it before I can use the Scanner again. That could get tedious. Perhaps I can just kill the process in Task Manager?
