Hi,

I've been struggling with this for awhile and haven't solved the problem yet, so any help is HUGELY appreciated.

I have an IBM Thinkpad T40 with two USB 2.0 ports. About six months ago, I started getting this message:
"This device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. Click here for a list of available ports."
This happened before upgrading Windows XP Pro to SP2 (the wording of the message was different) and then after. I've tried deleting the devices in Device Manager and letting Windows find them again (a few times), that doesn't do it.

Here are the IRQ entries that mention USB:

IRQ 11 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2 OK
IRQ 11 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4 OK
IRQ 11 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7 OK
IRQ 11 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD OK

What to do? Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you checked the BIOS Setup if the USB 2.0 are active?

other than that I am at a loss as to what it could be, except a windows driver fault...

Yep, I would check the settings in the BIOS, the cable being used (make sure it's certified for USB 2.0), and then I'm also assuming that you're sure it's a USB 2.0 device...

Yeah, it's all USB 2.0 stuff (device, cable) and they work on other machines. BIOS is fine. The thing is, the ports USED to work, but they got increasingly buggy over time.
Is there a utility that can clean out old USB drivers so I can reinstall them? And would I want to install the USB drivers, the mobo drivers, or something else? Thanks.

Check out on IBM's site if you haven't already. Try to reinstall any system (motherboard) drivers that you can find.

Here's a boatload of things to try from IBM (some of which you've already looked at but might want to double-check):

hadn't found that. thanks for your help, i'll try some of those suggestions.

Hi. I have a Thinkpad T42p with the same problem. I have spoken to IBM and it looks like I have to replace the motherboard (still don't know if this is the true issue). It is very strange but I have seen a few people with Thinkpads have this same problem start over the last month or so.

Slipstream SP2 into an XP Pro installation, and use an INTEGRATED SP2... Upgrading after the fact has caused as many problems as did SP1, before M$ offered SP1a...

Well, I finally called IBM (actually, they called me within a couple of hours of my filling out a form online - pretty good service, so far). They want to replace the usb ports (aka, the motherboard). Now to figure out what to use while the machine is away...
Thank for your help, everyone.

I had the same message a couple of days ago. Nothing I did seem to work. I finally reinstalled the windows directory from my backup, I just overwrote everything in the directory by booting up in Linux, that cleared it up ok and all is back to normal, it actually happened after windows automatically installed a security upgrade. My backup did not have the upgrade.
Now I disabled all automatic upgrades.

Just reading this and had to chuckle. Working for a large IT firm who do workshop repairs for the Majors I still find the answers funny.
The laptop equivalent of "reboot" is "replace the motherboard".
We see it all the time, DVD, CD, Floppy Drive, LCD's, any fault, replace the motherboard. Of course it fixes it. Chances are it was a loose cable or bad earth, but as you reconnect them on the new MB, it starts working.
Why does they do it then? Simple, costs.
Cost to the company.
Parts £30? (they charge you 200, but do you realy think it costs that), Labour @ 1hr £50 / hr, shipping another £20, so around £100 and laptop is repaired.
or
5 hrs finding fault @ 50 / hr, part £10, shipping 20, total = £280.

So when they say "you need a new m/b", you don't it just saves them time and money finding the true cause.

That my personal opinion anyway.

I have to laugh about your submission. I do fully agree with all you mentioned. I do know it from the communication sector. I worked for one of the largest Communication companies in military electronics. Some of our encrypted handheld radios cost 12500 US$ plus. If one come in under warranty the policy was to dump the unit, and give them a new radio. Our pure cost price for the radios was only 29 $US. So it was not even worthwile to open them up. Never mind the price to the military, that included R and D. and a lot of other charges.

$12,500 when your actual cost is $29? That's some profit margin. :)
My Thinkpad is still under warranty, and they even pay shipping both ways, so at least it doesn't cost me anything. Only thing they didn't offer was a loaner, but at least I can keep the hard drive.

Hi, I have same problems
I replaced my mainboard with different problem last week. It was fixed but I found this problem.

USB 2.0 recognized as 1.1.
any connected pcmcia card become unstable
my machine becomes super-slow.

Frequent blue screen when I try safe removel.
I tried several different ways to solve this problem myself. None of them work! Finally my laptop waits for IBM service.
