First can anyone tell me how to figure out the manufacture name? I can see a model but when I google it I cannot find anything. The device manager just shows a generic name for the external drive.

The problem that I am having with this device is it doesn't always burn. Half the time it says insert disk with no data on it after I start burning. I have used it with high end pc's, laptops etc and it seems that it likes only certain disks to burn on.

Really if I get the mfg name then I can start searching.

Please help.

If you'd post the Model name/number and any other data from the sticker, maybe someone will recognize it.

Many burners will only accept certain brands of disks. I replaced a burner last year, gave a friend the burner and a box of disks 'cause my new burner wouldn't accept them. Just replaced that one with a new burner (speed-speed-gotta have speed!), and it won't accept the brand I finally got for the other one! That's why you get a small package of disks until you find what works, and then start buying by the spindle.

It's a usb 2.0 52x24x52 external. Model 5224pi

mfg date: jan 2003

serial:99b1p1203230508459pwg000

made in malaysia.........no fcc id number :(

Sorry but that's not the writer.....this POS doesn't have any brand names on it. BenQ has it on their writers.

Thanks any way.

Gina

Well, like I said, Google shows that model number as belonging to BenQ. Hard to say what yours is with any degree of certainty but I didn't read more than the first 2 pages there, maybe something on one of the others.

i would be inclined to open the box and check the cdwriter itself if this is an external device. the box and the burner are not always the same manufacturer

Would you be able to take a picture of your external drive and either post it some where?

Thanks everyone for your help...after doing some digging I found out that it's an IO magic drive. Here is the conversation that I had with the tech......

Todd: Welcome to Live Chat. This is Todd. How can I help you? **NOTE** Operators help more than one customer at a time, reply may not be right after customer message.
Todd: Try another brand of media as we have had many problems with Memorex media lately. Try sony, hival, tdk, maxell -- basically any brand other than Memorex.
gina: Todd can you help me verify that it's an IO magic? Tdk doesn't work either.
Todd: use nero infotool and tell me what it shows up as in inforool and what firmware version it is currently using: gina: ok where do I find the firmware version?
Todd: on the drive tab
gina: It only see's my cd rom in my laptop not the external drive....the external drive show's up in my computer though
Todd: ok then try dvdinfopro and see if it is able to see it: gina: G.A2
Todd: and what does the drive show up as?
gina: Atapi
Todd: ok, yes the drive is ours. so when you try to burn it says to insert a disc?
gina: yes then it kicks it back out and says please insert a disk with enough free space to burn.
Todd: what software are you using to burn?
gina: sometimes it takes 10 times before it will accept and can read the disk
gina: roxio or clone cd
Todd: both software act the same?
gina: yes....
Todd: Go to the site below and download the Aspi files. Save them to your desktop. Once they are done, double click the file and it will extract them to the c:\adaptec\aspi folder. Once they have extracted, go to that location. Double click the aspiinst.exe file and it should update the aspi files. Reboot for the changes to take effect
Todd: Todd: if this does not help... go to to download nero 6 ultra edition. Use the following serial number when it asks for it: 1A23-0058-4010-2386-2165-3416. let us know if you have the same problem with this software.
Todd: also remember to use a brand of media other than memorex
Todd: Try ALL of these options out, and if you run into problems, feel free to contact technical support again. Thank You for using I/O Magic Live Tech Support. =)
Chat session has been terminated by the site operator.

Now I tried all options except nero because I don't really care for nero and when you buy a freaking 200 dollar external drive you expect the thing to work.....sorry needed to vent.

So here is the error that I get. "Cannot read medium incompatible format"……… I just purchased TDK, Fugi, Memorex
brand new cd's to test and none of them work.
