Can anyone tell me if Win 98 supports USB 2.0
If so how?
I have tried installing loads of mass storage/USB2 drivers
but still cant see my USB 2 external hdd.
Does your motherboard support USB 2.0? Since you are running Win98, I'm assuming your motherboard is 2 years old or more and probably doesn't have USB 2.0 support.
On the other hand, you may have installed a USB 2.0 expansion card. If that's the case, go to the manufacturers website to see if the card has the latest drivers.
Thanks for your reply
My motherboard is more than 2 years old, but if I load
Windows 2000 on my machine it works
You may say leave 2000 on it, but I need to run Win 98 on this particular machine
As of right now, support for USB 2.0 is only official for Windows XP (SP1). Microsoft should be releasing official support for Windows 2000 here shortly, if they haven't already. There are no plans for official support in Win9x/ME operating systems.
That's not to say you can't have it in Win98. However, Microsoft won't be providing the drivers. You'll have to obtain 3rd-party drivers, usually from the card or motherboard manufacturer that provided it to you.

deuceydog,
Accessdabbler is correct. I have installed a Belkin five port USB 2.0 PCI card on my computer running W98se. Have not had any problems to date, plus the added bonus of USB 1.0 compliance. All drivers were on the supplied CD with the exception of XP, these drivers are on the manufacturers web site. My motherboard is older than yours.
Hope this helps

which said, yes, Microsoft said it would not be releasing USB 2.0 drivers for Windows 98se, even though there was one for FireWire. As he wrote, "I can't say I was surprised by this, as Microsoft's business model is based on continuous upgrades and planned obsolescence." Well, I guess that makes better sense than to says they don't have enough money to fund the R&D. After he determined he had a NEC chipset, he went and found a driver here that worked fine in his case, but of course not certified by M$ for Win98se:
ftp://
Well, if you think about it, there's really no reason for M$ to supply the drivers. Every manufacturer out there that makes USB 2.0 boards supplies their own drivers.
People still use Win98SE (no doubt about that), but hardly anyone is still buying Win98SE off the shelf anymore, so what's the point of supporting something that already has 3rd-party support?
