Hi there

I have an external application that resides on a hosted web server. The URL is something like this
I basically want staff to be able to type is "application.domain.com" in to internet explorer and get directed to the hosted app.

I've tried using a CNAME record to do this but it hasn't worked.

I'm using WIn2k3 DNS and ISA2000 as my proxy server.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Use an A Record in your forward lookup zone so say your domain is circus.com, and you want bob.circus.com in the "Host" portion of the A Record place bob, and then use the ip of the machine youre trying to hit in "IP address" box.

CNAMEs are used to reference multipe sites for an A Record, if you are missing the A Record then it doesnt matter if you have a CNAME...

If I am way off, please advise but this is how I have interpreted it. In any case good luck!

I am also assuming that your clients use your DNS server to resolve names as I am sure you already know.

Thanks

I've created an A record with the IP address of the hosted server.

I've also created the CNAME record to point to the application URL itself i.e.
When i go to the URL itself, it brings me to the hosted IP address and not the application.

Any ideas?

Just to clairify also, all staff are using this DNS server to resolve names.

The internal domain is company.com for example, the external URL for the new application is application.company.com if you catch my drift.

The external url of the application is something like which we have redirected to application.company.com externally

Internally, we just can't connect to this application.company.com url.

I hope that makes it clearer.

Your web server has to re-direct app.domain.com to app.domain.com/application. DNS cannot do this.
