I have a downed server - I am quite sure the file that is damaged is Win32k.sys - Windows update was unable to copy this file during a Windows Update. The file i need is in a directory on the d: drive called WUTemp but if i try and access it i get a "Access is denied" message.

Help

Have you tried booting off the CD and doing a maual restore and copying the file that way?

When you are trying to access the file in recovery console are you logging in with the local administrator and password?

Actually saying local administrator can be misleading, if the server is running AD when it was promoted you were prompted for a user name and password for someone that was able to use the recovery console in the event of a crash. That would be the logon needed.

Thanks for your help guys but I ended up doing a parallel install and copying the win32k.sys file over to the old O/S and then booting into that.

Once in I uninstalled the update and have now sent out an email to all my customers to warn them of this!
