hi all,

i am quiet new to solaris. anyway i am a vendor and i was at a customer place today and i installed solaris 8 on a Sun balde 150. Prior to that, SOlaris 8 was installed but i has to reinstall it again to change the slices etc..anyway i have installed Solaris 8 many times but this time i got this error message before, (taken from /var/adm/messages);

Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.8 Generic February 2000
# Aug 11 11:28:24 a8610cu1 sendmail[227]: unable to qualify my own domain name (a8610cu1) -- using short name

I am referring to the "scmi2c: WARNING: card-reader0: CLK_CONTROL read ERROR: 0x00
Aug 11 11:28:27 a8610cu1 scmi2c: WARNING: Smart Card STC attach: Unable to find I2C internal reader!" problem...do you know what might be causing this? and can you tell me how to resolve it? i had installed Solaris 8 10/01 version and the lastest patch from the Sun website.

Also the other messages which appear..are they major problems or something i can close my eyes too.

Please help me out here.

Thansk and regards,
Dinesh Paul

Looks like if the smart card reader driver can't "power up" smart
card HW, it tries to clean things up, but in the process it releases a mutex it
does'nt own.

anyhelp on what can i do? also what is this smart card use for? is it very important for SOlaris? Thanks.

Isn't the 150 a fairly new machine?? I have a SunBlade 100 and, if I remember, it must have Solaris 2/02 or newer version. Some of the new hardware simply won't run on the older software due to architecture changes. Download the new stuff and see how it goes.

The minimum operating system requirements for Smart Card Reader operation are Solaris 8 with Patches 108909-12, 109354-14, 109695-03, 109887-13, and 110457-05.

Smart Card on TS8 HW 12/02 Workaround
-------------------------------------
* Configure smart card using Smart Card Admin GUI
(/usr/dt/bin/sdtsmartcardadmin)

or

* Disable smart card with the following command
smartcard -c disable

For Information about Smart Card:

Manuals 816-3217 and 816-3219 call 370-3933 Smart Card Reader v1.

Smart Card Reader 370-3933 supports single-sided card insertion.

Manuals 816-3217 and 816-3219 call 370-4666 Smart Card Reader v2.

Smart Card Reader 370-4666 supports double-sided card insertion

hello all,

i have been told to install Solaris 8 02/02 whereas before i had installed just Solaris 8 10/01.

My question is, if i install SOlaris 10/01 with all the lestest patches...will it become a Solaris 8 02/02? or am i missing something crutial here. sorry for the wierd question. just trying to understand. Thanks!

No. Older Solaris 8 will not become newer Solaris 8 by patching. Newer machines cannot even boot from 10/01. They must have 2/02 or newer. May not solve your particular problem but why add to your isssues with old software.
