One of my user folders does not have the right permissions set is it possible to change these without major problems?????????????

If it's just the users own home folder then as long as you set the correct permissions there should be no problems. Usually Admins full control, user full control, system full control.

You know what Jack Burton always says at a time like this...

Thanks for you advice but one thing I forgot to say was that the user folders are inheriting permissions is it okay to remove this?

Yes on just that folder you can select to not inherit permissions, when you do you will be asked if you want to copy or remove permissions. I usually select copy as it keeps the current permisions which you can then modify.
