HELP...

I am having a problem setting up Cognos 8, and was wondering if you could help. I have loaded the Cognos 8 software, configured the Web Server and Browser and set up a content store database and user ID in SQL Server 2005. I have also set up a database that I can use for reporting in SQL. The Cognos 8 software we received did not include Framework Manager, so I installed a copy of the version we had for Series 7. I have also copied over an existing framework that I want to use. I have set up a data source in Cognos Connection (using Cognos 8 service credentials), and the connection tests successfully. However, when I try to go into Framework manager or test the datasource or a file in Framework manager, I get the following error message:

UNABLE TO ACCESS SERVICE AT URL ( etc etc

I have looked on the Cognos knowledge base and it threw up these possibilities:

1018086 - FM.exe does not have sufficient access rights and is being blocked by virus software or firewall.
1001959 - The virtual directory name is not CRN.
1009873 - The server name and IP address need to be added to the hosts table
1002021 - There are multiple network cards configured on the server and the function is attempting to access the wrong card.

I have eliminated all but the first of these, and have got one of our guys looking at that one.

We have to resolve this today or our upgrade window is gone and we will be setting up our new hardware on MR3 instead...

HELP...

Any ideas what I have to do to get past this one?

If you bought the software you should be able to go to the cognos.com support section and download the pieces you have purchased.

If not you need to contact support and see if they can help you. Nothing much you can do with the wrong software. FM in Cognos 8 is very different then RN1.1 FM

do you have McAfee virus protection? Mcafee might be blocking your access. Ask them to allow FM.exe files and BMT.exe files. I haven't heard that FM7 works with C8. You should be able to get and use FM8.

Thanks for your responses - we now have framework 8 and it works. We can create new reports over but cannot 'cut and paste' reprot definitions and get them to work with Cognos 8. I have been trying unsuccessfully to understand what migrations tools are needed to convert ReportNet MR3 reports to Cogons 8 but our reseller is Sloooow to respond...

Should we need to use the migration tool to transfer ReportNet MR3 reports..?

No - no "migration tools" are required. In ReportNet Cognos Connection, go to Tools/Deployment, and create an export of your package folder and reports. This will get written to Program Files\cognos\crn\deployment. Copy the export (a zip file) to your Cognos 8 server - Program Files\cognos\c8\deployment. In Cognos 8 Cognos Connection, go to Tools/Content Administration and create an import pointing to your zip file export. Run the import and check the option to upgrade the report specs, and the package and reports should then be available in Cognos 8.

Regards,

MF.

there is also a tool to upgrade individual report specs should you need to do that.. comes with cognos 8.. RSupgrade or something like that

When you open up Cognos Configuration on the FM client, i asume you have replaced the word "localhost" for the true servername, or the fqdn of the servername in the gateway and dispatcher URI right?
