This is weird. Im running Sco 5.0.6 with all the latest patches...

Basically the uptime for the server keeps on changing, the backup is scheduled to run at 2.00am in crontab but never does.

Nothing suggest that the server has actually been shut down.i.e. usr/adm/messages and /usr/lib/powerchute (UPS)

But during the night crontab doesn't run and the uptime of the server changes...

Any ideas?

As you say, it's weird. As a first step you could put a little script in your crontab to write the time and date to a file, say, every 5 minutes or so. You can then examine this to check whether there are any interuptions evident. This might then at least give you a clue as to when your server is (or thinks it is!) being rebooted, and you can perhaps try to find out what's happening at that time with other processes. Hope this helps - get back to us if you think further help is needed.

remember at any time you can simply execute the "w" command (short for "who") and the top line will give you how many days/housr/min, etc that the server has been up....

that will help eliminate the notion that the server is rebooting,etc....

if your job isn't running in "crontab" but will execute from the command prompt, make double sure your script contains the correct PATH info, etc...that has gotten me a couple of times as an oversight, so you might want to check that out as well

post any further info if these don't work, and we will try to help out more

I wrote a script that grabs the date using the date command and uptime using the uptime command. The script is still running as im writing this so it hasn't stoped.

It was set to run every minute which it did until the 26th where it ran twice in two days! The same for 27th. Then it kicked back in and has been running ok since.

Any ideas???

if this was running as an "at" job in the background,
it appears perhaps someone rebooted the server and there is no script that "re-starts" that process to run

just an idea....otherwise, check the syslog file and see if you see anything there that gives you any clues

I ran the script using nohup, I left the script on Saturday and it was still running on Tuesday when I came in. So it hadn't stopped during that time...

I can say for sure the server was not shutdown. If it was my nohup would have been killed!

The syslog gives no indication that the server was rebooted.

It may be worth noting that this is a new Unix install, perhaps I should try and re unix the machine?

I think we are all stumped???

Anyway thanks for your help, Ill let you know what happens.

I contacted "Sco" who I think are just as stumped!!!!

How about a check in crontab to take a look at processes running at say 58 minutes after the hour for a day or two to see if cron shows as active just prior to the scheduled backup. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Ok, the latest....

On just a whim I decided to kill off the named server?!?

Well, the server has been up for 1 day, crontab executed and the backup and sophos scan went through.

So it looks as if it may be the named server?

Is this the sort of thing I can uninstall?

My machines been up for 3 1/2 days now. Its seems that since I stopped /etc/named then all is well!!!!

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what may be causing named to change the uptime?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
