Power goes out in my neighborhood in any and all rainstorms. I have a Cisco router that usually goes into rommon and my computer I don't want getting messed up. I have a pretty good surge protector, but I need a UPS. 350watt psu on the computer, and a few other things in need of protection (small). Any suggestions on a make and model, rating, etc? I know absolutely nothing about the subject. Thank you.

Tim

Hold up time is the one consideration and whether you want the system to automatically shut down is another.
There are very expensive models that do full time conversion thereby avoiding a switchover time.
For holding the system up long enough to get it down gracefully the APC units 450 and above would probably do it but 600 to 1000 would be better.

Thanks a lot---exactly the info I am looking for. I found a few on Ebay real cheap, as well as extra batteries. Thanks again!

Tim,

Power in my neighborhood goes out just long enough to reboot everything at least once a day.

Not sure where you are but I got both my APC UPSs at Sam's Club for about $100 each - APC UPS Backups Pro 1100 and APC UPS Backups 1250.

I have my router, computer, monitor and switches plugged into one - connected to computer by USB so it checks load and tells me how much time - I have about 20 -30 min. and could put more on.

The other APC UPS powers my other computer, monitor and my firewall/IDS is also connected by serial cable and gives me same kind of info.

Power can flash all it wants - I am still onlne and do not lose a beat, power is never off for more then 30 seconds and if it will be long outage like hurricane (Im in Florida) - I just shut everything off.

Hope this helps!

Thanks---it does help. I even thought about getting a 100 amp deisel powered generator, but my thoughts usually start off big. Ha ha. I'm a CCNA as well, and A+ and Network+, going for CCSP, but CCNP first. One thing I want to do is move to Florida---I love it there. I have heard that there are many opportunities for technical people there---is this true? I am planning to start my own small networking business, as long as Microsoft keeps convincing people that Internet Explorer ans SP2 for Windows XP are really secure. Are there employment opportunities there? I'm in St. Louis, and it sucks!

Your generator dreams are overkill. The 5kw stuff from Home Depot or Sams will do fine. When your world goes dark you're not going to be online because the people you support will be dark too.
I have a bunch of what are probably 100s protecting my stuff, 1 per computer. If I have something up when the power goes the system gets chopped unless it is back before I can cycle it. I have enough to shut down but not much more. But for 12.95 per UPS ir works. Gets kinda noisy though. 11 UPSs chirping at once.

directlyconnected,

I am in Tampa and market is so so ...... Florida is a big place - parts like Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa, Ft Lauderdale/Miami will be better then others.

Also Florida is a right to work state so saleries are not what you see "up north" but we do not have a State income tax - we let those coming to see the mouse and for "fun in the sun" pay the bills :)

I would plan a working vacation and come check things out in person.

Good luck!

Yes---vacation. What is that "vacation" thing?...
I'm the type to take a vacation to Florida and make things happen within a week and not come home. Edfair, the generator idea is for my house! Definitely overkill. But I have two small boys (9 months and 22 months). Anyway, thanks guys---I appreciate all the info. Have a good day.
