Hi,

I'm probably being really stupid here......

I have created a site that runs off a MS access database. It all works well on my PC (using MS Personal Web Server) however, it does not work on my ISPs server at all - I have uploaded all the .asp pages and the databases and connection documents. What have I missed?

Any hints would be greatly appreciated - my ISP have been no use!

Does your ISP support asp?
what connection method are you using?
Do you need a DSN set up on your ISP's server?

more questions but might solve it this way

Thanks, My thinking was on the right lines but maybe I need to be clearer with my ISP! Presumably, if they support ASP and can set up the same DSN on the server I might be in with a chance?

Thanks again.....

Hi Suzi,

Yep, you'd best contact your ISP to establish whether they will entertain the option of installing your own system DSN, many shared server ISPs may allow you 1 but that's it. I opt for DNS-less connections most of the time. Have a look through the forum, there are sure to be a few posts asking about this type of connection, it not, tell us where your db is in your file structure and we could hammer some together for you!

Have fun

Thanks M,

I'm very glad I subscribed to this - weeks of worry now almost over. I will try my ISP and if not will get back to you! Are there any disadvantages to using a DNSless connection?

Err....not that I know of. Schase, cheech, any ideas here?

I use exclusively DSN-less connections as I believe they take up less server resources, especially on a shared server system although I must confess that as I deal with a number of ISP based sites and have had issues with the DSN thing above I have steered clear from them since. No problems, so far (he cringes and invites disaster.....)

Have fun

Not really,

Theres the usual squibble/squabble about it. and with some ISP's you have no choice - it's either one way or the highway.

Heres this from Stardeveloper.com - I couldnt have said it better myself.

Why to use DSN Connections ?
Provides easy to remember data source names.
When there are lots of data sources to think of and you want a central repository to hold a collection of data sources without having to worrying about the actual site and configuration of the data source.

Why to use DSN less Connections ?
When you can't register DSNs yourself e.g. when you are running a virtual hosting account on other's server. Stop emailing system administerator, connect to your databases directly.
Provides faster database access because it uses native OLE DB providers which provide faster database connection.

Hardest part is finding the path for a dsn-less. Although there happens to be some cool scripts for this :: grins winks, winks ::

Easy vs more control.

Potatoe Po'tat'oe

Back to - which does the ISP allow.....

oh, one last thing.....

if you do a full path type dsn-less connection - if your isp changes server or locations......

gotta refind the path.

And there speaks the voice of experience! Had it happen to me too, a real hoot.

Aaagggghhhh and now I remember why I am glad to work mainly on an Intranet where I have full control over both dev + live server's. Even our is hosted by our own international guys so we just tell them over the phone what we want and it is done, well almost ;-) [thumbsup] Live long and make your kids suffer..
