upload IOS to 3660 router

Hi ,
when I upload my IOS file to a 3660 router from tftp server with "copy tftp flash" command , it starts to read the file but after reading 4096 bytes it stops and gives me this error :

Loading <IOS> from <Server> (via FastEthernet0/0): !
Loading <IOS> from <Server> (via FastEthernet0/0): !!!
!!... [timed out]

%Error reading tftp://Server/IOS (Timed out)

when I use show flash: , this is the output :

File Length Name/status
1 4096 <IOS Filename> [deleted]
[4160 bytes used, 33025984 available, 33030144 total]
32768K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

I've erased the flash and there is no ping timeout between the router and the tftp server . the file is correct and has no problem .
anyone may help ?

have you got the correct path defined on the tftp server, ie your ios image is in the folder that the tftp server is looking in?

Yes of course I did , the error is not "the file not found" . The file exists in that directory . everything seems to be ok , but it not works .

I uploaded another file and it successfully uploaded ! is this anything about buffer or anything like that ? maybe the buffer of that binary file is different with the one in the router... ?

what size is the ios file your trying to upload, do you have enough flash space for it?

..are the sizes different with the IOS? the one that worked compared to this dreadful one you just cant seem to get on your 3640..

...sometimes i had to use the squeeze flash procedure to get ios's on my machine that where close to the flash card size..

so i've been chased yesterday ;-) yes i fixed the problem and I wrote the clue in that thread , and also this problem is solved , using a FTP server instead of tftp ! it's so odd but it was true .

Hi All

This sounds like an issue I have seen before. Generally tftp servers have a maximum file size that they can transfer, and it is usually 16MB. This is certainly true of the tftp server that Cisco used to supply, and the freeware version the I got from 3COM's website.

However I now use Solawinds tftp server version 8.2 (again a free download)and thta successfully handles any size of IOS I have tried to download.

FTP does not have this limit.

I use Solarwinds TFTP as well (free) and it works great. The only thing I'm thinking is that if you can tftp small text files but not large binary files - maybe you have a problem with a network cable that is connected to the PC.

Is the NIC on the PC running TFTP or the switch port reporting any errors?
