We are upgrading an older voicemail pro server from 5 to 8.1. Release 5 doesn't have the backup/restore option that the newer releases have. The customer's voicemail server has a lot of attendants/modules with recordings etc that we do not want to lose, not to mention personal greetings and voicemails. Does anyone have experience with the steps it would take to successfully upgrade without losing current recordings and settings?

I would use the export option. If upgraded properly you shouldn't lose anything assuming you're not changing PCs. Our process is to backup the wavs, accounts, names and such. Export the .mdb file. Do the upgrade. If all goes well you don't need the backups. If it goes south, you can always get back to square one.

If you are changing PCs that's another story.

We aren't changing PC's. Thank you for the help!

If you are not on site, avoid using RDP when upgrading.

Kind regards

I've requested that the customer use something other than RDP (logmin etc.) But everything I've been reading is very old concerning RDP issues and callflows. Scansource said that issue isn't a problem anymore. Was there every a technical tip to refute this one?

Let Scansource fix it when it breaks then, it does still happen, they're wrong :)

Sometimes it goes well, but mostly not.
Don't think anyone would care to waste their time to find out what scenarios that work.
Remember that an upgrade could involve moving from R5 up to R9, that old software has not been informed that Scansource knows better.

But if russian roulette is your game, go ahead, do the RDP!

Kind regards

Gunnar

I've informed the customer of the RDP issue, so it will be up to them to provide an alternative. No Russian Roulette for me.

We use RDP all the time.
The problem only occurs when two users have the VMPro client open.
When we use RDP then it is always on a system where only we log on to.
No issues at all.
Only the really old versions can give this problem.
This means that i always try to check if there are any other users logged in before i open the client.

I've seen R8 go screwy with it, either that or it's a huge coincidence :)

I always use mstsc /console and then login.
Then i check the users and if nobody is on it then i open the client.
I only had it once or twice in the last 3 years.

With all the information, the customer decided to use RDP anyway. We didn't have any vmpro clients open during the upgrade and everything went fine. No Call flows missing. A few mailboxes needed to have their greetings reactivated but that's it.

Just always have a backup so you will not be surprised :)
