Is it OK to upgrade to Win XP from Win Me without reformating my laptop, is there any precautions to be taken?

Also will upgrading get rid of some Kletx Virus files in My restore folder, that dont let me use restore now ?

Thanks
TB

It is ALWAYS better to rub it off and start clean. I know you dont want to hear that, but I am sure that most here would agree.

When encountering KLEZ or many other new bugs, one must disable the the restore feature in order to remove the bug.

Yes I've done that both in normal and safe mode to no avail

That worked Roamer..Thanks
But I still have issues that I though were caused by the Virus.
I can not get into properties when I right click on my Desktop..
I can not download from most sites I get a blank page with a small icon on the left hand corner no message.
And it wont let install my Mcafee Online AntiVirus
comes back with msg Active X not on...
Any thoughs.

Hi tbalza,

If you are sure the little bugger is gone (check from DOS again, just to be sure), get your data off the box while you can.

as far as Windows being junked, an overlayed installation will probably fix it (you will lose your updates and restore points, all else should be okay), or I have had a bit of luck with SFC (System File Checker). If Windows is still acting quirky after that, you probably are best to rub it off and start fresh (Mebbe XP eh?). Is your restore function working?

I have not worked with mcaffee (I don't prefer the brand) so I speculate on the problem here:

1. The virus may still be active. This really is a pesky bugger and can come back if not removed exactly as instructed .

2. Damaged vestiges of the program won't allow a re-install (Norton AV has this problem): See if there is a listing for Mcaffee in Add/Remove Programs. If it is there, choose to remove it and restart before attempting an install. If that does not work, perhaps there is a repair tool for this purpose at McAffee's site.

If you find the bug is returning inexplicably, remember that it infects by email or by network. DO NOT even open your email client until your virus protection is back up, updated, and set to guard your email, and then discard any email suspected of containing an executable attachement. Stay off of network connections if possible. If you need network to access Inet, turn off all network shares before re-accessing the network. If you need network shares, set them (on all machines if needed) to "read only" before reaccessing the network. This will allow you to "pull" files to your machine, but you will not be able to "push" files onto your machine from elsewhere.

Best of luck tbalza, let me know how it all turns out!

Thanks roamer as soon as I make my decision and upgrade or not I will let you know the outcome.I do appreciate your input...
