Hi,
Our Domino Administration Server (v5) is installed on an AS400 system.
The plan is to migrate the server to a Windows 2000 Server AND to upgrade the Domino Server to v6. This is what I had in mind:
- shut down AS400 (v5), do a clean install of v6 (using existing server.id, server name, domain name etc.) on Win2k, copy db's to Win2k, upgrade names.nsf, etc...

Would you recommend this or am I asking for problems?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Remco

Sounds good to me. Keeping the original files for the server ID, certifier ID, names.nsf and admin.nsf is all I can think of that you'll need to really pay attention to.
Otherwise, do the install on a fresh system with the reference elements defined above, then once the install is finished, copy over all nsf files from the previous server and turn on Domino.
You'll certainly have to wait a while before being on line, what with all the consistency checks and upgrading and whatnot taking place, but in the end there should be no db issues.
Of course, you'll need to ensure that the R6 server is patched up to the latest version.

Hi,

Personally I prefer an alternative system that has the advantage that their is NO downtime even if things go wrong.
Your risk is in moving the files from AS/400.

I explain:

1. Let the AS/400 system running as it is.

2. Install the R6 server on Windows 2000 as an additional server in your Notes domain.

3. REPLICATE all databases you need on the new server.

4. Copy certifiers , user ID's and other stuff you might need to the windows server.

5. Let the new server run for a couple of days. Make sure replication is set up to keep it up to date.

6. Now move your users to the new server in small groups of no more then 100 users at a time. For this: just create a small agent in the Domino Directory to change their mailserver to the new machine.
Additionally you can write a memo with an action inside that will update these people their location and connection documents.

7. If your AS/400 box was the incoming SMTP server, now re-configure your firewall to direct mails to the new machine.

8. When all users are moved (can take some weeks) run the "decommision server " procedure that is provided with Domino to make sure that all tasks and databases are transferred.

9. Let the AS/400 box run for a while untill you are sure the W2K box runs fine and you built up enough experience to administer it.

10. Shut down the AS/400 Domino server and remove it from the Domino Directory.

This procedure is a lot more safer to do. It involves almost no risks and your users will experience no downtime!

I can guarantee you that your procedure will give you a major headache and that your system will experience problems for days if you encounter a major problem unless you are very eperienced with setting up W2K, Domino R6 and are very familiar with the differences between R5 and R6.

Make sure you read the R6 installation and migration documentation!

Hello.
i am in the same position as the 1st poster of this thread. i had a question with regards to "creating a small agent in the Domino Directory to change their mailserver to the new machine. Additionally you can write a memo with an action inside that will update these people their location and connection documents."
how do i go about doing this? btw, i have no experience with lotus scripting or formulas. is there a resource/code already out there that i can use or copy?

thanks.
