Upgrading to SQL Server 2005 Question 1

Can someone tell me what happens to DTS packages when you move from SQL Server 2000 to 2005? From what I am hearing there are no DTS packages there. Should I convert them to SQL Server Agent jobs?

I'm not sure what happens if you do an in-place upgrade. However, I do know that if you install SQL Server 2005 on a separate server and migrate everything to that server, you can still use DTS packages. Before you migrate the DTS packages, you have to install the "SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer Components" on the server that has SQL Server 2005 installed. You can download the DTS Designer Components from Microsoft. The link is below:

Scroll down until you find "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer Components".

In sql 2005 it is SSIS. The only way to Migrate or upgrade from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 is to rewrite the DTS packages.

I don't understand lalitha1. I was able to use the migration wizard and move the DTS packages to the 2005 box. I was able to find them in the Legacy node and execute them.

What other obstacles will I face?

From what I've read, DTS won't be supported in future upgrades of SQL Server. So it's a good idea to eventually re-write the DTS packages using SSIS. In the meantime, I personally haven't had any problems running our 40+ SQL 2000 DTS packages with the SQL 2005 database engine. Some of them are fairly complex but still run fine without having to make any modifications other than changing the data sources.
