We've currently working on upgrading from SMS 1.2 to 2.0. I need help in looking for books and more info on SMS 2.0. Also, info on the migration would be a huge help too.
Thanks

Try the SMS Administration book from New Riders. I did a technical review of this book and highly recommend it. Not only does it include SMS information, but it is also based on the writer's own upgrade experiences in a large organization.
Beware of upgrade issue with client machines. Remote tools can cause machines to freeze on boot. It becomes a very manual task to fix. I know from first hand experience. Everything I saw stated that I should not have a problem. But I did. I was working an SMS implemenatation and was forced to work extra hours unbilled because of this major mess. I needed to go to all of the client machines and edit the registries to clear out SMS 1.2. None of the utilities wanted to work. They would work on some but not on others. What a pain. Make sure you have a major plan of attack before rolling it out and a back out plan.
And don't worry...we are all here for you.

oneworld@goes.com

We will carry out a migration from SMS 1.2 to SMS
2.0. Could you announce your migration inputs (on the servers and the clients) and the manner that you chose:
- complete migration
- desinstallation of the complete site and new installation
- destruction of the clients, then migration of the servers
- installation SMS 2.0 in parallel of SMS 1.2
- etc...

Pierre-Alain Pilet
I have started a project to replace SMS 1.2 with 2.0. I say replace because my plan is to remove 1.2 completely and then install clients to new Windows 2000, SMS 2.0 SP2, SQL 7.0 SP2 servers. I don't want any information migrated from current database. This site has a bad problem with duplicated ID files from Imaged machines. I am SMS 1.2 and 2.0 certified. I have been working as an admin on 1.2 for one year, but still do not feel comfortable in 2.0 environment. I have not even setup a 2.0 Secondary Site yet. The New Horizons classes did not cover this. My focus for the next month will be documentation of a plan to do all this. Then testing that plan in a testlab.

The SMS 2.0 SP2 Beta works great on Windows 2000. I have a full time Microsoft Engineer assigned to me for the project. Makes life much easier.

Anyone have any thoughts or words of encouragement?

John Rolstead
MCSE
314-654-8454
