Hello,

Our current network has users logging into netware servers and logging into Windows locally with locally created accounts (we have no domain). We plan to upgrade to a Windows 2000 domain.

My question - when i add a user to a domain, when he/she logs into the domain for the first time, it will create a new profile for the domain account. Is there a way to copy that users old profile (it will have the same username) so he/she will still have his desktop, my docs, favorites, etc...?

What i noticed happen is that it creates a second profile for the domain user, and creates a folder in documents and settings like "jsmith.domainName" or "jsmith.000". I don't want to go through the hassle of copying user files over from one profile to another - any ideas?

We do not have roaming profiles or intend to use them. Each user (~400 total) has only 1 local profile.

Thanks,
Andrew

rightclick My computer> properties.
go to user profiles tab
and use the copy to function to copy the entire profile to a temp directory.
then delete user's profile from computer and get them to log on again.

then copy it all back..
a bit DIY, but it's friday afternoon, best i can come up with considering... ;)

Or just log on with the new user name just for new folder to be created.
Then log on with a local administrator account, go to c:\doc&settings\ and delete all files (except ntuser*.*) for the newprofile.
Then copy all files from all profile (except ntuser*.*) to the new profile folder.

Hope this helps.

No easy way around this. The above posts are ture. Another alternative is to use the files and settings transfer wizard located in tools on the XP CD. I've had mixed results with it though.
