HI Everybody,
I am trying to install Mac OS X 10.2 on my Mac system which has OS 9.0. I get the message that "cannot continue installation, there is no previous version of Mac OS X" on this system. OK.. anyone have any ideas that they care to share :>).

Thank You,
Quincelady

Apparently you don't have 10.2 install CDs you have 10.2 upgrade CDs.

You need the full install disks.

Yes, that is exactly right. Can't I download the Mac OS X 10.1 and then upgrade?

You must purchase a license for OSX.

Unless you have an old system with minimal RAM, there does not seem to be much use installing such an old operating system. The latest 10.3 and 10.4 have had many improvements and security enhancements.

OK, I just ordered the 10.1 Install discs. I will install them and then upgrade to 10.2. This is not my PC. I am doing this for a friend. He wants the 10.2.I will keep you posted.

Thank You,
Melinda

Make sure that you have the latest firmware for your particular Mac prior to upgrading 9 > 10 - there are many experiences of machines rendered inoperative from not having the necessary upgrade prior, iMacs in particular.

Check the Apple website for the requirements - 'fraid I can't provide an exact link at present due to browsing restrictions.

OH, OK. I will check it out.

Thank You very much,
Qincelady

Melinda - you misunderstand - it's my browsing restriction that prevents me going to non work-related sites!
There should be some details at but it'll probably relate to the current version, Tiger (10.4) and the prior Panther (10.3).
You should be able to check firmware is up to date by using OS 9's Software Update Control Panel - it'll need an internet connection to check the configuration as against apple's website.

OOPS![blush].. guess I did. Ok I will check out the site for updates. I am not sure exactly which ones to download but I'll figure it out[dazed]. Thanks again.. I really appreciate your taking the time out to answer my posts.[smile]

Blessings,
Melinda

Maybe this will help. Apple refers to versions 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 as "reference releases", which means that the software is distributed as a stand-alone system software package that can be installed regardless of the version of Mac OS currently installed. You may see them called "Full" or "Retail" versions if you search eBay.

So, while you COULD install version 10.1 as you mentioned, you could also install version 10.2. In fact, you'll have to purchase 10.2 (code-named "Jaguar") if that's what your friend wants to have ultimately installed. THEN you can download the updates to 10.2.8 on this Apple page.

(oh yeah, the 10.1 updates are right here)

One other thought - drlex mentioned "firmware updates" earlier. If you have a "slot loading" iMac (that is, you put a CD into a slot in front of the iMac instead of into a CD tray that ejects from the front), be sure and read Article 75430 on Apple's Web site.

I wish I had before I upgraded MY iMac...

OK... I got the info. Thanks soooo much Pmactekker, and Jeff, I will keep you posted once I have "mission completed:>)"

Hi,
I sure did it now[3eyes]. I installed Mac OSX. When it loaded, it just loaded. Did not prompt for user name, password, nothing! Now my 9.0 is out to lunch(MIA). I have tried to start in Safe mode by pressing the shift key, also tried installing the disc with the C key depressed but I cannot get into the system to run a fix command .... heeeeelp[sadeyes]

When it loaded, it just loaded

And what is the problem?

Perhaps there is a good FAQ about system passwords. faq604-4278

Hello Jim,
Thank you for your lead. Unfortunately this didn't work. The problem is that the OS X loaded without even asking for a user Id or password. Now there is no access to any of the applications I had installed with 9.0.
In addition the OS X did not install completely(took about 5 minutes to install). I have tried to re-install the OS X so that I could use the fixdsk option, or first Aid option. However, when I hold down the C key it still boots into the existing installation. I have also tried to start it in safe mode(Ctrl&Alt&S) but cannot get it to boot in safe mode. I gather that this is a site where we can come for "help" if we have a challenge at hand. I regret that you percieved this as a complaint but you are entitled to your own perceptions. If anyone else can help me out, I would appreciate all feedback.
Thank You Kindly,
Melinda

I did not perceive this as a complaint. I was just confused when you said that 'it just loaded' since this is usually good news.

HI Jim,
I guess I was misled/mistaken by the message that you have under "I hope this helps".

try holding down the option key while you reboot. (take cd out first)
this should give you an option to choose a startup disk.

If it does then select the OS 9 one. This will make it boot from OS9, then you can start again with OSX

Marcus

OK.. I found the option key (ALT). I booted up holding it down but this darn OS X is holding on for dear life...grrr. Did not let me have a choice. Is there anyway I can get into the "registry" and rearrange the boot order. Or perhaps even disable the amdin password feature. It does allow me to log off and sign in with a username and password. When I do it doesn't rec. the info. i put in grrr. I am determined to get this up and running! :>) Even if I do go bald...lol!

Quincelady,

If you are referring to the "ALT" key on your keyboard, the "Option" key for Macs would be analogous to the "Windows" key. That is, it is two keys either side of your Space bar.
