I've got a Netfinity 5000 with two Pentium II 400 Mhz chips. I'd like to upgrade this to two Penitum III 550 Mhz chips. I've looked at IBMs website and it says my model supports the 550 Mhz as the fastest processor.
1) I'm wondering if there are any bios or service processor upgrades that I will need to do?
2) Is there any power supply concerns?
3) Any other concerns?

If you are not at the current version of BIOS and ASM firmware, you should definitely apply the updates, regardless of whether the new CPUs require it. Assuming you have sufficient power for your existing configuration, you will not require any additional power for the upgrade. You will have to modify the switch settings on the system board (switch block SW1) for the new processors. For the 400MHz CPUs, switches 1-4 should be: 1-on, 2-on, 3-on, 4-off. For the 550MHz CPUs they should be: 1-off, 2-on, 3-on, 4-on. The HMM has further details.

Thanks for the information.

What is ASM firmware? (I assume it is not assembly firmware).

Also, what is HMM?

asm is a service proc.(Advanced System Management).hmm is a hardware maintenence manual. can be downloaded in pdf format from ibm support web site. You might also need different vrm's. those are voltage regulator modules. you should also make sure the 2 cpu's have the same stepping.

I shall use google before asking stupid questions!

The 550MHz CPUs take the same VRMs as the 400MHz CPUs. The processor stepping levels are irrelevant on IBM servers - the BIOS update addresses any conflicts.

Help on NF5000 mainboard

hi everyone

i've just bought an used nf5000 board with original cpu and memory and that i planned to insert into a standard atx case but now two problems arise
1) the power connector(s): my mb has two of them, one is atx-sized and the other one seems to be an "auxiliary" power plug: where can i find the pin voltages data for this auxiliary connector in order to build an appropriate power adaptor ?
2) the front panel leds / buttons pins: same problem as above -> where can i find schematics to understand what's the couple of pins to short-circuit to power up my NF, what the couple for the power led, what for the speaker etc etc.. ??

like beatles said.. please please help me!

thank you!
