Upgrading MSDE database

We will be upgrading our SharePoint MSDE datbase to SQL 2000. Once this is done how do I get Sharepoint to "see" the new database?

What we are planning to do is to detach the databases from the MSDE engine, remove MSDE, then attach the databases with SQL 2000 engine.

Does this sound like it will work?

What type of authentication are you using for the database? mixed, or windows.

Be sure to make a backup of the database prior to detatching. It could be easier to backup the database from MSDE, then restore it using SQL 2000.

Microsoft has released whitepapers and upgrade instructions (step-by-step) for this which you might want to look at before doing any changes. Just do a search on the MS website.

Thanks. Those instructions are for SQL 2005, and we have installed SQL 2000. Would the instructions work for SQL 2000 as well?
