About to do an upgrade on MICS 7.0 to 7.1 XC so we can add a second 6 port fiber card. Two questions, do we need to use the upgrade tool? and will customer data be retained if we don't use the tool? Thanks in advance.

You do not need any upgrade tool and yes the data base should stay (notice I said should)

Power down
Change software and power up
Make sure no alarms and check data base
If good power down and add new hardware
Power back up and test.

Biggest thing is not to do Software First without any NEW hardware just keep what ever is in there now.

You will find a big gap in DN's if you add STN Mods as the new DNs will be AFTER the B2 DNs of the 1st cards. Once your up you should move any Line Mods to the new expansion card as they should be in the ports and work down.
