I have an older Cisco 2500 router that we keep as a backup. It works, but is only IOS 10.2. I would like to upgrade it so it has CDP (IOS 10.3, but would prefer an upgrade to 11.2). Since this is not the latest-and-greatest IOS, is there any way I could obtain this from Cisco without incurring any cost? How would I go about this?

First of all you cant get the IOS's from Cisco without having a CCO account and being a CCIE. Look for a program called IOS hunter. Secondly if its running such an old IOS you need to check ammount of DRAM and Flash, if its got 16Mb/16Mb then go for the latest IOS, if not I would certianly go for atleast version 11.3 pre version 11 the commands were different eg write terminal etc so the commands have changed twice since then.

Visit for free Cisco rack access.

I don't have a CCO account (and I'm definitely not a CCIE) :( . I was under the impression that the older IOS like 11.X was more obtainable.

What is IOS hunter?

wabob,

Am I the only person who can "google" :)

Go to and put in "IOS hunter"

You will get about 3,100 returns - it is exactly what the name implies :) :)

Also it will not cost much to upgrade to 16/16 on the RAM and FLASH - check Ebay or go to he has everything for Cisco routers.

As for the IOS - if IOS Hunter does not help again try Ebay!!

I hope this helps!!

You don't actually need to be CCIE to get the latest IOS. I am not CCIE, but I have access to all thos resources. My account is associated with my place of employment though and this may be the reason I can access. Or it may be due to the contract association (smartnet). I am not really sure, but you can create an account and give it a try.

Software packs (Feature Packs Cisco calls them)are available on eBay to upgrade your router's IOS version. These usually have several versions available on one CD. Be aware of the Feature Pack you purchase as some are IP only, others have IP with IPX, DEC and other features.
