Hello all,

We currently have Windows Server 2000 running as our domain controller. All of our client machines are XP Pro. Is worth it to upgrade to server 2008 or 2003? It seems like something we should do just to stay current but is their any other real good reasons/advantages? We have no plans to switch to Vista atm.

Thanks

The only reason I can think of is because they'll end maintenance on W2K Server at the end of 2010, IIRC. This would mean no more security update patches for your server(s).

Other than that, I'm of the mind if it ain't broke, why fix it? IF there's nothing more you need from your network than what you're using, then why bother?

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

I'd switch if the hardware needs to be replaced, and then get current hardware (quad-core Xeon?) lots of memory (16 GB) with a current OS (W2K8 x64), so you will be up to date for a longer while.

Don't bother that (presumably) old hardware with a brand-new and more demanding OS.

Upgrading to windows 2003 utilizes GPMC to make it easier to manage GPO's on XP clients, and there are a few features in AD that are nice to have; like drag and drop :)

The next time we will be able to revisit this is in three years so it may be a very good thing if support ends in 2010. Looking at our servers they are Dual 2.0 Ghz Intel P4 Xeon's with 1GB RAM(gonna see how much I can upgrade to here...) It may be time for new hardware.

At least more memory....it is sooo cheap now.
