Upgrading from Exchange 5.5

We have an old NT system with Exchange 5.5 and for various reasons, mostly hardware, we are thinking of getting a new server with SBS 2003. Quite by coincidence, we have just had a major problem with our system sending out spam and we were cut off for 48 hours by our ISP.

This has now been sorted, but I am interested in what Exchange 2003, which comes with SBS 2003, offers over Exchange 5.5 as far as security is concerned?

We run Sophos and one thing I have noticed is that Sophos MailMonitor will not run on Exchange 5.5. But apart from that type of issue, what does 2003 server/exchange technology offer over NT/5.5 as far as virus protection is concerned?

Overall, security has improved a lot of course, but you would still need a very decent Anti-Virus solution to protect you.
Always preferred is a hardware firewall with SMTP filtering, though they are expensive.

From what I understand, Exchange 2003 has a very nice antivirus API for third parties like symantec.

We currently have a 5.5 box and are ready to move to exchange2003 after experiencing a lot of the same problems. We will probably use Symantec's Mail Security for Exchange Servers to handle the anti-virus software.

(remember, you'll need an active directory environment for Exchange 2003)

well this problem has been faced by almost all of us i have just moved from 5.5 to 2003 earlier i was having symantec protection suite for SMTP gateway...............now we are using trend micros's interscan messaging suite as a antivirus and trend micro interscan spam filter for filtering spam it works greaaaaaaaaaaaaat for me ....u can go ahead and check it out it might work for u as welllll
