Has anybody tried this yet?? Do you have to upgrade just the clients or the sql server databases too?? How well do modified forms, reports, code upgrade??

I'm a little worried about upgrading, but our reseller is telling my boss that it will be a piece of cake........I'm sure that won't be the case. %-(

I haven't done it yet, but plan to do a test upgrade shortly. There were no table changes, so reports SHOULD upgrade, but you can never tell. You need to upgrade BOTH the procedures on the SQL server database and the clients.
The partner I work with said their upgrades have gone smoothly. We don't see much new functionality tho, so the upgrade may not serve much perpose.

Just my .02. I'll post my results after I do my test.

Thanks for the info. I'll be curious to know the results of your test!!

Just upgraded from 6.0 to 7.5 and had some issues in GP Manufacturing. We had to create a dummy account and site which GP suggested - MFG 70 Conversion Account and MFG70CONV site. Since Manufacturing 7.5 don't use the WIP process, all the In Use materials have to be converted then dump to the proper fields in ver7.5.

If you want to know more about this, check TechKnowledge.

7.0 to 7.5 really is a piece of cake. I work for a VAR and have done many of these already - the upgrade goes very fast, as there are no table changes. Reports and forms seem to work nicely as well. Typically they've taken a day or so to do.

Anifong,

I have a couple questions maybe you can help me out with.

Once I do the upgrade on ther server, do I have to upgrade the clients in order for them to work, or can I run some clients at 7.0 and some at 7.5 while we are going through the upgrade process?

Also, have you done upgrades with modified forms and reports that have custom VB code?? We have done a lot of modifcations and I would hate to lose that.

Its good to know that the tables don't change, we have some custom VB apps that link directly to the tables!!

Thanks for the help

Mike

You'll have to upgrade all of the clients, as I believe when you try to login it compares the client with the current version number saved in one of the system tables, and won't let you in if they don't match.
We've done lots with vba customizations on forms and reports, and they've mostly just worked. I work with a developer that goes through the code after the upgrade, so my experience with that isn't first-hand. I do know that other than problems with third-party add-ons to Great Plains, all of the customizations have worked. The windows are all pretty much the same as they were, so that minimizes problems with the vba.

Just to add a thought to this. I usually just uninstall clients during an upgrade and install the new version fresh. It keeps things cleaner that way. There were some issues with upgrading clients back on upgrade to version 6.0 so that kind of scared me off. It's easier just reinstalling anyway.
