I am trying to upgrade one cimputer from win 98se to xp pro. I am using the upgrade cd. Everytime I try I get to the analyzing your computer step and it stops half way. I have tried it 3 times now. The progress bar on the bottom keeps moving but the one on the left stops half way. I left it on for over an hour and still nothing. Any ideas?

Thanks

XP is very picky! Seriously, run a complete virus and spyware check. Microsoft has a "Compatibility" check program available on their site. You'll be surprised what WON'T work under XP. Remove any boards not needed to run computer. Unplug any USB. Run "Memtest 86" to check your memory. Be sure to backup any data you may want to save. I.E settings (addressbook, etc,) will be replaced. Your "My Documents" will be replaced ("old" My Documents will be saved somewhere else as <your name> Documents).

Also.. as a note, since you are running 98, it is very possible you have ISA cards in your system..

ISA is not supported under XP. So take them out of your system, as they won't ever work.

ISA is not supported under XP.
ISA is supported as a buss under XP.
ISA non-PnP devices are not natively supported under XP.
ISA PnP devices are.

From the HCL list:
Windows XP will not support anymore the ISA non-Plug & Play version, which are configuredeither via jumpers or via a software configuration utility (see details of supported versions )

I've tried upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP on more than one occasion. You should really consider backing up your data and then doing a completely fresh install.

It's almost a sure bet that at least some of your 3rd party Win98 programs are not going to function correctly after the upgrade.

Use the Windows 98 Startup Disk to reformat and load Windows 98 from scratch. This would be a great time to reformat the hard drive. Then do the XP "upgrade".

When the XP installation hangs up, hold down the power button until it powers off. Wait 15 seconds, then power it back on. Don't press a key to boot from CD. See if it continues with the installation from where you left off.

I hope this helps!

98 doesn't have to be installed to use the Upgrade XP CD for a clean install of XP.

With the 98 CD as a qualifying product, you can clean install XP. During XP Setup it will want to read the 98 CD for a few moments just to make sure you qualify to use the XP Upgrade CD to perform a clean install. After that moment of excitement it will install XP as a new operating system without the baggage of your 98 system.

You can also use XP's Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to save Files or Settings from 98 if you want to.
