Upgrading Exchange 2000 to 2003 but NOT 2000 AD

I have a Windows 2000 AD environment with Exchange 2000. I am going to install Exchange 2003 on a new server (Windows 2003 member server) into the existing organization and then decommission Exchange 2000 after the mailboxes and everything else has been migrated.

However, we will NOT be upgrading AD to 2003 right now.

Do I have to run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep from Windows 2003 CD on the 2000 AD servers, as well as Exchange setup /forestprep and setup /domainprep?

Or since I am not updating AD to 2003 do I only have to run the schema updates from the Exchange CD?

You only need to run the schema updates from the Exchange CD, so you will be running...

setup.exe /forestprep
setup.exe /domainprep

then running the full setup.

Note that if your GCs are not all running on Server 2003 you will be unable to use Outlook over HTTP, but you can add that later when you upgrade the servers to 2003.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Are you saying I won't be able to run OWA on Exchange 2003 or RPC over HTTP?

Also in this scenario does the MS 314649 article regarding mangled attributes apply to me?

OWA will work, Outlook over HTTP will not. Outlook over HTTP requires the RPC over HTTP service to be running and that service is only available on Windows 2003 servers.

The mangled attributes issue happens when you run the forestprep & domainprep from the Windows 2003 CD, so it won't affect you NOW, but you will want to follow that KB later when you upgrade.

I hope you find this post helpful.
