Here's our topology: 1 Win2000 Server as DC running AD, IIS 5, and DNS; 1 WinNT SP6A BDC running IMail; and 1 WinNT BDC that is also our File and Print server and it also has SQL 7 running our databases.

We want to upgrade to 2003 Server but I'd like some opinions on the path to follow. I was thinking of upgrading the 2000 server w/AD and DNS first; upgrade the NT w/IMail second (as a second DC and as a secondary DNS server) and then upgrade the other NT box but keep it as a member server since it is our main file server and since it has SQL.

Speaking of the SQL box, anybody upgrade to 2003 on a box with SQL? Any problems?

When you say upgrade are you meaning a total fresh install ?

Ive just rebuilt mine took me the weekend, i basically now have 2 DCs of which are both Global Cats, just make sure you make both Global cat servers cos if you have only 1 and that goes mad its a pain as i found out :)

I then have my SQL box a member server

My main DC is my File server My exchange server is my 2nd DC my SQL and citrix is just a member.

Not much help but gets you going

I'd like to upgrade all 3 in place if possible. But how would it affect these worries:

1. On the 2000 server (DC), we have IIS running our intranet site - any problems there? What about current AD and DNS setup?

2. On the NT server (BDC), we have SQL running. Again, how would upgrading in place affect SQL? Also, this is our main file server, so I don't want to lose anything.

3. On the other NT server (BDC), we have IMail running for email. I've seen where there's problems when upgrading a server that has exchange on it, but what about IMail? It's an older version, but we plan on uprading that too after we get the server to 2003. Again, I don't want to lose anyone's info.

I guess I'd like to know any pitfalls with the above. I don't want to have to rebuild everything. It would be nice if everything will still run smoothly after an in-place upgrade.

Just trying to get a feel for what will happen.
