Hey All,

Hopefully the subject was enough. Here is my question - When we upgrade our SQL Server 7.0 to SQL Server 2000, will the CALs we purchased for 7.0 carry over (we are assuming they do) to 2000, or do we have to now purchase additional CALs for 2000?

Thanks in advance!

I beleive they should cover you for a SQL Server 7 to 2000 conversion.

Thanks

I hate to disagree with Jay. But I don't believe that they cary over. They should only be valid for you SQL 7 install. If you check the verbage on the CALs you should notice that the paperwork says SQL 7 Client Access License. I'm like 99% sure that you will need to repurchase. Now if you happened to purcahse SQL 2000 CALs and used your downgrade rights to use them on SQL 7, then they should still be usable on SQL 2000. I tried to find some docs to reference, but I can't seem to find the one I'm looking for.

Thanks for your responses Jay & MrDenny,

I have been doing research on my part and it does seem like MrDenny is right. I have a few opinions from Microsoft licensing specialists from CDW and a couple other businesses all saying that as a rule of thumb, whenever you upgrade to a newer version of SQL Server, the user CALs should be upgraded as well.

Of course, I am sure that those "specialists" working on commission had nothing to do with it :)

Thanks again guys,

Tim

One thing you might be able to do to off set some of the cost of the new CALs is to sell the old CALs. There are still plenty of people out there running SQL 7. I'm fairly sure that the CALs are transfurable.
