Cisco's site seems to contradict itself slightly. I want to upgrade our Pix 520UR from 5.2(1) to the latest version, 6.2.1 ED.

The document at indicates upgrading from 5.2(x) only requires doing a "copy tftp flash" to tftp the new bin file.

The release notes ( seem to say that you need the boothelper file. (The most recent one is bh61.bin.) Am I reading this stuff wrong?

OK, so which is it? Just needing TFTP? I'm hoping it's that simple.

Warning, check your flash memory with "sh mem" and "show ver". Your PIX 520 maybe doesn't support 6.2.1.
You must have for 6.2.1 :
Binary REQUIRES 32MB RAM AND 8MB FLASH

Bordeau Jerome - FRANCE

pixfirewall# sh mem
134217728 bytes total, 117936128 bytes free
pixfirewall# sh ver

Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Version 5.2(1)

pixfirewall up 66 days 16 hours

Hardware: SE440BX2, 128 MB RAM, CPU Pentium II 349 MHz
Flash i28F640J5 @ 0x300, 16MB
BIOS Flash AT29C257 @ 0xfffd8000, 32KB

...

No problems there. So all I need is TFTP, right?

TFTP alone will get the job done... email me at rhedrick@interpathlab.com if you would like an upgrade document that I wrote while upgrading to 6.1
