Planning to upgrade a 3300 MXE 8.0.x.x.x.x to lateset MCD.
will the old MXE have to be replaced? where on MOL can you find upgrade info as the Engineering Notes have turned into hundreds of pages per? What's with the "find" command?? I learn "how to" then Mitel changes it :-(

You will have to upgrade the memory at least. You will have to go to 4.0 first to get the SDS stuff sorted and in place without errors, then you can go to mCD5.0 (and probably MCD6.0) You will also need new licences so will need to be in SWA for the system.

Personally, I would think by the time you have done a new controller may make sense...it will need a complete install and programme though as the dtabases are incompatable I believe.

Upgrade info is contained in each release note for a software level. So if you look at MCD for instance it will have the upgrade infor for each level of software you need to go to.

An MXE should have the required amount of RAM (512MB), you can look at System Hardware Compute Cards and check to be sure. You may not have to do anything with SDS, it depends on the environment the system is installed in (if it's a standalone system, there's no other system to share data with so SDS would be off). At the very least, you will have to make sure the system has Software Assurance on the Application Record ID in Mitel AMC, and upgrade to MCD 4.0 UR4 (10.0.4.14) first.

Err, standalone systems need to go to 4 first to get the sds ......Appendix A: ScreenShot for selecting “Classic” vs “ Common Distributed Data”
During new installation, one will be prompted to choose between Common Distributed Data (known as Extended) and Classic as shown below
a. Telephone Directory Synchronization via SDS (Extended mode)
b. Telephone Directory Synchronization via OPS Manager (Classic mode)

So it depends on whether you use ops manager or not...I did one recentley (although not a MXe) and chose classic then ran the update tool on the system to get it to extended. Seemed to be the safest way. Then i took it to MCD 5.0.

@Wireman50 - don't get defensive when someone rightly comes along and gives more details. You would never get the prompt to choose between classic and extended when performing an upgrade (New installs only). Lundah did indicate the need to go thru 4.0 first. The MXe would always have 512 of RAM. SDS/ OPS only applies to multinode sites.

@ Zete (As I just went thru this this weekend I will give you a step by step guide)

1) - Make sure you have Software Assurance
2) - Download MCD 4.0 SP4 (10.0.4.14)
3) - Download Latest MCD 5
4) - If Multinode site maintained by OPS, make sure all pending changes are propogated (then turn off OPS)
5) - Health check system and clear any alarms (make note of alarm threholds as these may change in an upgrade)
6) - Backup all systems including VM before starting upgrades
7) - Export IP Telephones All form from all systems (to be used later)
8) - Proceed to upgrade to MCD 4 SP4
9) - Health check system and clear any alarms
10) - Verify all IP sets that are back up (Compare IP Telephones all)
11) - Run Maintenance Command for Migration Precheck
12) - Clear and issues identified by precheck and run precheck again until all clear
13) - Backup system - with or without VM is up to you (I go without) - Do not skip!
14) - Migrate system to RDN mode (There is a form with checklist to follow in SDS section)
15) - Backup system again - very important!
16) - Upgrade to release 5.0
17) - Health check system and clear any alarms
18) - Verify all IP sets that are back up (Compare IP Telephones all)
19) - Reset alarm thresholds if required (from step 5)
20) - Backup system

Please note, there are many minor steps required that I have not detailed for the sake of brevity.
Multinode systems are very finicky and may require some creative fixes
I've run into issues with I.E. 8 at various stages of the upgrades so be prepared with alternatives

Good Luck

What's most important is that you realise ... There is no spoon.

Its all about memory but I don't think the MXe ever had less then 512M of RAM so it will not need to be replaced. As others have said its 8 to MCD 4, go to GDM ( i.e common data directory and SDS ). Then go to MCD 6. You will need valid software assurance as the 8 to MCD 4 and MCD 4 to 6 both will require new passwords. If you are looking for upgrade procedure use the Release Notes you get with each software download and check MOL for a guide to change to GDM. Otherwise follow what kwbMitel said.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.
