I remember a thread containing information about upgrades beyond 3.1 will no longer be free, but I searched and couldn't find anything regarding this since then. Is this still the plan and confirmed by Avaya? If so, is there a link to the announcment on their website? Thanks.

Brian

I thought it was mentioned in the GA for the initial 3.1 release but I couldn't find it.. I think they won't start charging until 3.2 at the earliest though...they are just giving advance warning.

Thats what I thought as well, but I couldn't find anything on the Avaya website regarding this issue. I was trying to find any kind of official announcement so I could show upper management to prepare them for paid upgrades, as one of the selling points our vendor used to sell us the system was free upgrades on software. If you are able to find an official announcement, I would greatly appreciate a link. Thanks.

Brian

My vendor used the free upgrades on software as a selling point too..apparently it is 1 of the standard selling points and has been true for a while, unless we have the same vendor.

I spoke to an Avaya marketing rep a few months ago about this subject, and he told me the next major release would be chargable. He mentioned 4.x. He also mentioned dot release updates would continue to be free within the major releases ie: 3.0.44 to 3.0.69

Now take this with a grain of salt as we all know marketing and reality seem not to always work from the same script

I spoke with an avaya engineer yesterday and heard the same thing that they will be charging for 4.x and up.

We dont need to wory for a while then, as it will probably take avaya until 2008 to get the 1st build of 4.XX out.

I was told that 3.2 will be the first charged release. Some cool features are backwards compliant manager and no more deleting older copies. Also you will be able to have better templates for users too.

I wish Avaya would publicly release this kind of information. I know we are waiting for the next 3.1 release (any day now?), but is there any kind of roadmap or timeline of when 3.2 (or 4.0) will be released so we can at least try to prepare for a paid upgrade when we are used to free? I don't have any inside contacts at Avaya, so this board is a great resource!

Note that IP Office Release 3.1 will be downloadable and usable free of charge however please note that it
is Avaya’s intent to charge for future software release after release 3.1 via a license key upgrade.

The above is mentioned a few times in this document:

IP Office 3.1 Product Update
Revised: September 21, 2005
Update Number: #7
Version 1.0

if they going to charge for software it better be not so full of bugs as it is now
