I have a windows 2000 box that was running perfect. Pop'd in the WINXP Upgrade CD and installed with no problems.

When I login with my network credentials the Welcome music starts playing and the login box disappears (as it should) and then sits on desktop color (blue default) screen for about a minute, then finally displays the desktop. Internet, CD Drives, etc not working.

I go to Manage COmputer and I see most of the services are set to Automatic however, they are NOT STARTED. I manually start them and everything is fine. When I reboot, I have to repeat this again.

Whats the deal here? Why arent my services starting?

I did not install SP1 or 2 (and will not because I have another xp that runs flawless without SP's) but I do have all the security updates installed.

Help?

I wonder what version of XP CD you used, it would have to be pretty old not to have a service pack embedded in it?

Have you tried MSconfig in the Start Run box to make sure the Services are not unchecked in there?

Perhaps a clean install would be a better option rather than an upgrade. You can clean install with an upgrade CD, you just have to show it your 2000 CD, when it asks to see the Qualifying Product during Setup.

This will save your settings if you want.

?? This is a simple upgrade. Done it many times. There is no way I am going to clean install.

There has to be a fix for this..

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I went ahead and installed SP1 and the problem still exists.

This seems really hoaky to me, for the services not to start is frustrating. Theres got to be a fix for this.

So I clear all the System Events and reboot and this is the only red flag:

The Task Scheduler service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

The problem still exists, I login and have to manually start the common services like:

dhcp client
workstation
server
print spooler

Hi,
What account(s) are those services configured to run under?

Did you use any file encryption in 2000 before any upgrade?

Have a look at this key in the Registry and see if you have any Dependency listed and try removing such item (Backup-Export this key first). It might be a Dependency that has been marked for deletion during a failed uninstall of other software such as Virus Scanners or similar.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Check all the services and any value called "DependOnService"

Edit the value to delete items from the dependency list and see if the various services then start.

This article will give you a clue as to where I am coming from.

DHCP Client Initializes Improperly and Causes an Invalid IP Address

- No file encryption

- I have no key called "Check" under Services

THe DHCP link you posted is clear of "Edit the value to remove SYMTDI from the dependency list". It was not there when I checked.

It sounds like the pathing is wrong, as it cannot find MSCONFIG or the service entries files.

Right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Environmental Variables, and check the path statement in the lower box.

It should point at least to the correct %windir% directory, including specific statements for system32 and wbem.

I followed your instruction bcastner and here is what is specified in the PATH line:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\system32\WBEM;C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel

and windir is set to:

c:\winnt

I am not surprised you have no key called "Check", I was merely suggesting you "Check" all your failing Services for any ""DependOnService" type of value that is common to all failing Services.

Since I'm here, just my 2 cents worth...go ahead and install SP2...it should resolve most of your problems.

That's assuming your NIC drivers are getting you to the internet and MS Update.

Had a similar problem and SP2 resolved all of the issues.

Worse that could happen is you waste a little time.

Guys;

I may be little off-base here, but in looking at the path, isn't "WINNT" the default sysroot for W2K while "WINDOWS" is the default sysroot for WXP?

Might explain why WXP can't find anything...

It was an upgrade from WIN2k to WINXp. There is no windows folder, only winnt

WINNT is the pretty standard result when you do an Upgrade install over Win2k.
