I upgraded from a Winchip 200 mhz to a AMD K6-2 550 mhz and the system does absolutely nothing. I've disconnected everything down to the power supply and AMD CPU and get no beeps at all, BUT - I also get no beeps using the Winchip (although everything works fine when everything's hooked up). Could there be a problem with the motherboard that's specifically allowing the slower CPU to work but won't recognize the faster CPU? The jumper settings are all correct, and Gigabyte tech says the CPU should work. I have a Gigabyte GA-5AA board with the latest BIOS. I'm on my third replacement CPU (thinking that the processors were bad) and I don't think that's the problem.

I've thought about testing the processor in another board, but the computer stores all tell me they can't test a socket 7 and I don't know anyone that has a socket 7. I wanted to just get my money back on the chip and give up, but TigerDirect won't even consider it. So I guess I'm stuck.

HI THERE..

I HAVE A GA-5AA MOBO.WELL IVE HAD IT FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS AND HERE ARE SOME OF THE ODDITIES WHICH HAVE CAUSED THIS MOBO NOT TO BOOT FOR ME.

I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VOLTAGES OR THE CLOCK MULTIPLIERS,BUT I HAVE FOUND THAT IN MY CASE I HAVE A FAULTY STIFFY DRIVE POWER PLUG AND THAT CAUSED MY MOBO NOT TO BOOT.MY RAM WAS NOT SEATED PROPERLY,MY IDE CABEL ON THE MOBO WAS NOT WORKIN PROPERLY.ONE OF MY PCI SLOTS WERE BLOWN.

WELL OTHER THEN THAT PERHAPS YOU BIOS UPDATE DOES NOT SUPPORT THE CPU YOU HAVE.WHICH UPDATE DID YOU USE?

PLEASE REPLY TO BRYCE_V_S@YAHOO.CO.UK AS I DONT VISIT THIS SITE OFTEN,AND ILL TRY AND HELP YA.

I was given a AMDk6-2 550 cpu. The core voltage setting is 2.3 v. I have 2 mother boards with socket 7. One is TigerSystems S7-MVP3. The core voltage jumps from 2.2 to 2.7 v the othe motherboard is a PC100 M577. The core voltage settings go from 2.2 to 2.5. Can either of these motherboards be used for the AMDk6-2 550 AGR CPU. Thanks for any help you might provide. AMDS hasn't responded.

WitsEnd,

Forgive me if I missed it through all the correspondence that has taken place on this issue, but did you check with the actual manufacturer of your mobo regarding whether your mobo will accept 550 MHz? For example, I have a Micron 400 MHz that, from third party information, will accept a chip up to 733 MHz. Micron, however, says NO!--I can take it to 450 MHz, and that's all. It may just be that you will need to put another 450 in yours. Just a thought.

I've got even worse news for you. I currently own 2 of the Gigabyte 5AA mother board with AMD K6-2 500Mhz CPU's. 1 of the systems died a month ago. Turns out the board is dead because I can swap all the pieces to the other system and it works fine. Then last week, the second system failed to start up. Did exactly what you guys have suggested as far as change core voltage etc.. the board is just dead. CPU(s) work fine in a friends machine. Very strange that both boards died within a month of each other and of course, 2 months after warranty. I'm going back to the dealer to complain anyways as these boards have been flakey from the start. Do yourself a favor, if you can get rid of the board do it.
