I upgraded from a Winchip 200 mhz to a AMD K6-2 550 mhz and the system does absolutely nothing. I've disconnected everything down to the power supply and AMD CPU and get no beeps at all, BUT - I also get no beeps using the Winchip (although everything works fine when everything's hooked up). Could there be a problem with the motherboard that's specifically allowing the slower CPU to work but won't recognize the faster CPU? The jumper settings are all correct, and Gigabyte tech says the CPU should work. I have a Gigabyte GA-5AA board with the latest BIOS. I'm on my third replacement CPU (thinking that the processors were bad) and I don't think that's the problem.

Make sure you have the correct CORE and I/O voltages set - CORE is usually 2.2v. I've had similar problems in the past with K2s - try setting the speed down to say 233MHz with CPU and AGP clocks at 66MHz, and set clock at suitable multiplier. If it works, then slowly increase settings towards 550MHz. Failing that, try a 500 rather than a 550MHz CPU - I think they're more stable...

Thanks for the reply. The CPU says 2.3 for the core voltage. I tried 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4. I also tried the lower speed settings and still the board acts like there's no processor installed. I'm stuck with the 550 MHz (no returns), but the first CPU I tried was a 500 and it didn't work either. You mentioned the I/O voltage - where do I set that?
Also - when setting to the lower speed I keep the multiplier at 5.5, is that right?

You may not have jumper setting for I/O on your board. You will need to bring the multiplier down from 5.5, probably to 3.0 or 3.5. Does the K2-550 get warm/hot? If yes, then you are at least getting some power to it...

I haven't left the computer on long enough to warm up (only long enough to see if the hard drive starts or to see if I get a beep). I'm starting to think it must be another bad chip, but it's hard to believe TigerDirect would send out 2 bad chips in a row. I changed RAM and that didn't help either. My power supply is a 250 watt AT. Is that enough for the AMD 550 mhz?

Yes, a 250W PSU is fine for this mobo. However, if you attach masses of drives and cards to the PC, then think 300 or more. With no heatsink on it proc should feel warm/hot in 30 seconds or so.

HI WitsEnd,
Just give a try more..
1. You remove the power from outlet..
2. SET THE MotherBoard jumper to CMOS Clear.
3. Connect the power.. switch on... NOPOST but wait for atleast 15 clear seconds..
4. then.. switch off.. remove the power
5. Set back the CMOS jumper back to its position
6. Now start.. PLUG & PRAY !..
HOPE THIS HELPS solve:) I have done this several times in various clients units.

Alternative... if the Motherboard manual says.. PRESS HOME or such thing to rest the BIOS when power on.. you can do that instead of above exercise. CMOS clock multiplication/CPU speed setup by default.. some times makes this necessary.

CAUTION.. NEVER SWITCH ON EVEN TO VERIFY WITHOUT CPU COOLER ON. YOU COULD BURN THE CPU (internal not visible) beyound recovery in just few seconds.!

Hope this helps :)

If your sure that all your jumper setings are correct Try putting in a PCI video card in it and attach the keyborad, make sure the ram is seated correctly and fire it up. I've seen this problem before on EPOX MOBO's and once you put in the PCI video card and then set the BIOS for agp everything worked fine. It's worth a shot.

I don't have a jumper to clear the CMOS, but I have reset the bios to the default settings and rebooted. The chip does warm up after a moment so there's voltage there. I appreciate all the help everyone has given me, but I think I'm going to give up and go with a new, faster board and processor. THANKS FOR THE INPUT!

Well if you don't have a CLEAR CMOS jumper on the mobo, there will be some other method of doing it. Some boards have two little solder pads which just need shorting together with the blade of a screwdriver, or just remove the battery for a few minutes.

Good luck!

I tried unplugging the computer and removing the battery for about 5 minutes, put the 550 chip back in and the computer's still dead. Put the 200 chip back in and it all works fine. I just can't figure it out. The AMD K6-2 550 doesn't HAVE to have an ATX power supply does it (I'm using an AT 250 watt)? I've also tried a PCI video card and that didn't work. Unplugging everything but the power supply and ram I didn't even get a beep. So I guess I should go on the assumption the chip is bad, but I keep being told 3 bad ones in a row is REALLY unusual (but not impossible).

Question!: does this board of yours support the 100htz front side bus your AMD K62 550 needs? was your 200 CPU 100FSB? I'm not sure myself but I've just had and cured a similar problem on a socket 7 board, the DEAD Cyrics 333 MII was only a 88? FSB, something like that, and when I put a K62 400 in the board it didn't work, a computer engineer friend of mine pointed out that the board might not support 100FSB and he was right! I got an old 233 IBM that works fine because it runs at the same FSB as the Cyrics did.Don't no wether any of this is rellevant to your problem, but I hope it helps. Martin

The board is suppose to support 100 FSB. I went through 5 emails with the GIGABYTE tech concerning the problem, and he said the 550 processor should work. The IDT Winchip 2 200 MHz chip is a 66*3 3.5 volt chip. I was originally using a AMD K6-2 450 MHz chip (100*4.5 2.2 volt) when it quit working and I put in the 200 MHz chip. I just haven't been able to go back to a fast processor.

Did you by any chance Flash the BIOS ? I'll let you know how to recover from a bad FLASH if that indeed is what has happened.

I did flash the bios with the most current version and everything works fine with the slower chip, just not with the faster chip.

Are you putting the heat sink on when you try to fire up your computer.
I ran into a similar problem working on a computer. I was testing the chip and it kept hanging. It turned out that the processor heats up so quick that if you don't have the heat sink on it just freezes.

Always keep the heat sink on or you risk frying the processor. Which could have happened to the first three you bought.

Yes, I used the heat sink. TigerDirect said it's unheard of to have gotten two bad procesors, but that's what everything seems to point to.

WitsEnd,
just looking down through the posts it seems that the Motherboard is beeing overloooked as a cause of your woes.
You said that a 450MHz chip died in this motherboard and so you put in a 200MHz and it work. This would lead anybody to believe that the motherboard was still fine. However, we are dealing with a computer here :) . I suggest you beg, borrow or steal a known working motherboard and test your new chip in that.

As one of my colleagues says:
"If you knew how computers worked, you'd wonder how they work at all"

and I'd always respond:
"In a field full of cows that are all lying down, the standing up is a bull!"

hope this helps.
